Calling All Mechanics/ Old Skool Rodders
Just bought a 1936 FORD P/U all original except 12v upgrade and newer wheels. Drove around past 2 wknds found it needed an alt. replaced this week. Went to go for a ride this morn and it wont run once in gear, just dies with any kind of load (just truck, me and dog). I am not a motor head only a sheetmetal guy. So I am at a complete loss?
Start with a vacuum gauge, s/b about 15 - 22inches, or you have a leak. No power could also be a dry shot on the carb's accelorator pump. Motor off, head in carb with a light, open throttle several times to see if fuel is getting squirted into car. Harder now: check fuel pressure to see if its a pump or filter. Does it rev up in neutral????????????

Will be checking today and changing fuel filter. Yes revs in nutral, but as soon as let out clutch wants to puke out unless constant light reving.
you might have a bad Batt, not dead just bad,, i know it starts,, but when put in gear it dies,, just to show your batt is good , with radio and ac if it was installed OFF try it again, also if you have one of those jumper batteries connect it and try to drive, then you will know it is or is not the batt,, or it could be a loose connection at the Batt. jim.
Thanks, Already replaced bat with alt. Had to move anyways, last owner ran exhaust against old bat location and fried a 4 inch hole in the side wall of bat.
I am thinking I need to rebuild carb, replace line, maybe fuel tank. When removed inline filter I found 1/8 inch rust shards. Thinking if I got to go through all this I should also change manifold to a double or triple, and make it a real ROD.

Sounds like a vacum leak on the carb. . . . check the bolts on the bottom of carb and the gasket or vacum line. if it dies that quickly it may be a simple fix.
Sounds like a cool ride . . . good luck....

Where else did they run the exhaust? If it's near fuel lines you could be getting vapor lock.
Fuel pump could also be an issue.

Newer tank, old mix match line metal/rubber, at closest 5 inches away from exhaust. But before me sat for 1 yr with 6 month old fuel then 1 1/2 yr fuel. Exhaust will be rerouted soon, from almost straight pipe and headers, to headers with short pipe to front of rear wheels. Will try to post pics, but I usually have problems.
