I've always loved the look of the Prowler.

Unfortunately, the reviews I've read of the car have been less than stellar.

One review had the recommendation that you never try to back up the car if the top is up. You can't see jack out the rear window. in fact, they recommended never to drive the car with the top up, because you could lose a city bus in the blind spots.

Also was mentioned the lack of ABS on that car, and the bad front to rear balance of the car meant that if you had to perform a panic stop mid corner, the car would spin like a figure skater in the Olympics.

The tire sizes were ridiculous, and spinning them sucked up way too much of the power of the car. Smaller sizes of the same design would have given a car that was much more lively to drive.

We had the opportunity to go to the Lingenfelter collection with the Prowler group...... some of those cars were pretty damn nice!

In 1995 (at a AMC car show in St Louis) I met, and split a hotel room with a Chrysler Engineer who was on "Team Prowler". He wound up being responsible for the cowl design, and I think the rear quarter area as well.
We stayed up until 2:00 AM discussing the Prowler, and I tried my best to make a point of how important a V8 was to the project.
He finally admitted, it would be nice, but there just wasn't enough room for a V8. I told him, that it would take any independent car customizer about a week to transplant Chryslers V6 with a V8.
Again he agreed but said Chrysler wouldn't hear of it, and I guess as they say, The rest is history.
It's a way cool car, and performs well, especially the later model ones.
Yet I was able to pull a bright yellow one thru 1st. and 2nd. with my XF (on Woodward a couple years ago) before the guy shut it down.
Still, you got to hand it to Chrysler for having the guts to build something that radical.

 

I've never seen a picture of one with the hood up. It looks even less practical tan with it down. It's clearly a vanity car - and at times I am surprised that it got past the prototype stage.

But, yes, Chrysler had abase where it produced some fantastic looking cars - and I feel that it's going to exit that phase and go back to more regular fayre. I only hope that Fiat can influence more than the balance sheet in this respect and there are more exciting looking cars from Chrysler in the future.
