Default Crossfire's Granddad AMX

Nicely done. Tripped many a recollection.

Where is the connection between these cars? I see none at all.

Mostly just the size and weight. My 69 has a 390 V8, way more power than a CF but doesn't handle or brake as well as a CF.

The AMX is a nice car to have, but some think it is connected by blood, different corporation, different sides of the pond, different every thing, the size and weight is probably matched by cars we would not be seen dead in.

Some seem to see the connection.

A search on this site for AMX brought up ten pages of references including photos, statistics, measurements, Chrysler connection, etc.

I have owned both. My reaction to the first Crossfire I saw in person was that is what my 1968 1/2 and 1970 AMXs would have grown up to be by 2004 and 2005.

Well, I, for one, see the connection. The AMX's original purpose was racing.

I took a look at the "Other Auctions" link.

'70 Toronado
'40 Ford
'66 Cyclone Convertible
'08 SRT8 (700 miles)

Dammit! I used to have a '70 Toro. God, I loved that car! And so did my wife-to-be! Wink, wink!

The AMX was built by American Motors 1968-1970.

After Ford purchased a controlling share in Jaguar, they felt it entitled them the right to claim all of Jag's intellectual properties.
Soon after their acquisition, Ford had an ad featuring many of "Fords" great accomplishments from the past, and sure enough they placed a classic XKE in that advertisement.
Now far be it for me to argue with a well respected company such as Ford Motor Company.

Maybe it's more like the "Six degrees of Kevin Bacon".

American Motors built the AMX and Javelin, which eventually became the Javelin/AMX. AMC commissioned Karmann of Germany to build 280 1969 Javelins, thus qualifying them as a "German" built car.

Chrysler purchases AMC and continues using several of the old AMC logo's like, Spirit, Eagle, Concord, and SST, but they released the AMX logo. Probably because it stood for "American Motors eXperimental".

Daimler Benz purchases Chrysler and decides to build a small high performance sports car using as many old Mercedes Benz parts as possible, and the Crossfire is born. Remarkably the car turns out being the most statistical matching "Twin" to the 33 year old AMX ever. With identical performance (to 100 mph) and braking from 60 mph. With similar handling and maneuverability characteristics. Mimicking the 390's, 315 H.P. using an engine 1/2 it's size.

I80, you may think there are lot's of cars out there that fall into this category, but up until the Crossfire made it's debut, there weren't any. I know because I search for 35 years and the Crossfire is as close as I could come. If implying that a "Rambler" could ever duplicate anything that the Crossfire can accomplishment offends you, then all I can say is join the club. Most AMC enthusiast aren't that open minded either. My Crossfire gets no loven at all when ever I attend any of their GTG's. If anybody asks me what AMX stands for on my Crossfire, I tell them, A Mercedes eXperimental, or A Mopar eXperimental, take your pick.
As MiamiTVR pointed out, I think of the Crossfire as a "Modern day" AMX, or what it could have evolved into. Nothing more sinister than that Dave. lol

My 2C worth....I stumbled across a 1965 Apollo 3500 GT and wondered if it too was ever compared to a "dog taking a squat" like the Crossfires, they do seem to resemble each other a bit....Peace
