"The parts falling off this car and oil drippings are of the finest english quality"...note left on my car while at lunch, about sums up the experience.

1991 Sterling 825SL, acura legend wrapped in the finest english connolly leather, wilmington carpets, and burled wood.

Drove it off the lot, went over a railroad track and lost the trip computer. Back to dealer.

Two weeks later, washed car and decided to drive it around the block to dry off...turn car on, radiator fan does not work, back to dealer

Just driving, stereo stops and windows proceed to roll down along with the moonroof...in the rain...back to dealer

Replace stereo with nice alpine system, then all hell breaks loose. Trip computer does not work, speedo works some of the time, radiator fan works only when I go over a bump, windows open and close on their own, moonroof motor falls out and I have to use a allen wrench to open it, heated seats are stuck on (in 110 california summer), memory seats return to past life positions (someone really short must have owned this car) where I can barely fit and just enough room to slam on the brakes and pull over. Back to dealer for 3 months while they stripped the electrical system. Returned back to me working, but I had really come to like the jeep comanche they had given me as a loaner.

Driving home from the dealer after owning the car for 6 months, hit a bump trip computer goes.

Miss the turn to dealer but make it onto the Infiniti dealers lot instead.

Walk out with a 1991 2 door infinity m30 coupe - burgundy with grey leather and chrome wheels fully loaded. That was a nice car, lesson learned and have been staying away from the english since (although it's hard to stay away from some of the jags).

I had a new '76 Plymouth Valaree it was the biggest piece of crap ever and fortunately for me it caught on fire at the dealership while in for repairs and was a total lose. Doesn't get much better than that. It had 2,000 miles on it and my wife and I were on vacation back on the East coast.

1970 Mercedes 280SL - Just had my '74 Alfa spyder totaled by a truck, Bought the 280 from the original Mercedes dealer that sold and serviced it form new. 1 owner, Bought it in 1977 - owned it 6 months.
it drove like a tank
exhaust off
engine had to be rebuilt - I paid for parts
window (both) mech broke
AC went out
after engine was rebuilt water pump went - then the thermostat

that was it - sold it to a guy who paid me in $20's and his IRS check

I thought that Alfa's were expensive to fix - not in the same solar system as this thing was, 1st and last Mercedes. Still don't like them - so why do I have a crossfire?

Searching for tire opinions... but came across this thread. Who can resist?

Worst car would be a toss up between my '78 Volaré and my '91 BMW 318i. The Volaré was the worst handling, steering, braking, driving car I've ever been in and the BMW was a nickel and diming piece of sh*t. In it's defense, I think it had been parked for a few years before I bought it and never quite recovered from that.

Best car, Xfire aside, probably goes to my '94 Ford Probe. 150,000 trouble free miles and it was decently fun to drive. Only dislike: it was that early '90's teal blue colour. I sold it for no particular reason and the guy who bought it totaled it two days later.

A 1964 fern green Peugeot 403. Don't ask. I hoped I help to push the company out of the US. Yes, it was that bad (and no one could work on it, either). Some things are best left buried...

84' Nissan/Datsun longbed pickup. Baby Blue with more rust than paint. No A/C or Power Steering, Crank Windows and Flip Locks. Blue Vinyl interior. Messed the radio up immediately so no radio either.

What a beauty.

A 1984 Camaro V6 with the 2.8L fuel injected... Worst engine chevy made. Engine blew and I only had it 4 months. Right after that I bought a '85 firebird 2.8L carb and that engine blew to. Had something to do with the type of medal they were using for the pistons in the 2.8's.

Overall my first car - 1964 Corvair. What do you expect for $100.

Second place for me is unique as it is my worse care (left me stranded the most - actually the only car to leave me stranded) and it also was my best (for ride enjoyment) BMW 635. It would have been a great ride except for the previous owner trying to save $50 by jerry rigging a Ford Mustang O2 sensor instead of a BMW sensor. That created a nightmare of car dead in heavy rain - runs fine in dry weather/mild/moderate wet weather.

the Xfire has given me the closest - and I am beginning to think perhaps better - ride to the 635. Sporty but good for a long drive on an interstate. Cool look on both also.

Default Volkswagen/Audi NEVER AGAIN

(then) Brand New 1995 Volkswagen Jetta GLX III VR6. It was actually my father's car, but I had to fix every single problem on it with him and he eventually gave it to me. I only took it because it was "free" but in the end it costed me a lot of time and aggravation.

In its day it was supposed to be a BMW-fighter. To be fair it was powerful. But here are the problems it had in 6 years of ownership:

1. Fuel gauge never showed anything but "empty"
2. Every vacuum hose and emissions hose eventually rotted out after 5 years (my Corolla still has original hoses after 15 years).
3. A very expensive emissions solenoid failed causing a constant CEL.
4. O2 sensor shorted out
5. Fuel pump relay shorted out and needed to be replaced.
6. Rear Driver side brake/turn indicator let water in and literally looked like a fishtank after rain.
7. Passenger side door lock mechanism failed.
8. Suitcase muffler rotted out.
9. Front brake discs warped and needed replacing at 15k miles.
10. Ignition "Coil pack" cracked and failed causing engine to stutter continuously.
11. Oil pressure sensor started leaking. I replaced it. Leak went away.
12. Oil Filter Housing HOLDING the Oil pressure sensor sprung a huge Jedd Clampett-sized oil leak on a 50mph road and left me stranded.
13. Key lock mechanism wore out on all doors and needed replacing.

The worst part about the car was that it was a German econobox car with leather seats and an uprated engine. In the end, I felt like I was just driving an overpriced, terribly engineered gas guzzling econobox that ended up being a lot less sporty than the advertising made it out to be. The thing understeered like mad and the weight distribution was the opposite of sporting.

The car finally met its end after being t-boned making a left turn. The insurance money was the only good thing about that car. After that, my opinion about Volkswagens was solidified - people buy VWs in a moment of weakness, when they are taken in by the flashy and well executed advertising!

No....the worst engine chevy made was the HT4100 that went into Cadillac's.

It used long stus with nuts on either end, these studs held down the cylinder head from one end. and the main bearing caps at the other!

Basically, anyone with one that took it to service got the same question regardless of what was wrong with it....."do you want another one of these or do you want us to put in a real engine?"

I am surprised I haven't seen this one on the list - Pinto. Before I start my tale let me warn you I get even with unreliable cars. I took one to a crusher and another to a rifle range for target practice! But that's another story.

Anyhow in the early 70's I was going to college on the GI bill and I needed a cheap car to commute 50 miles each way to college and still hold my X and two kids. Enter the Pinto. We figured it would give us good mileage (it sucked), cheap to operate (as soon as the warranty expired it broke all the time) and was a death trap in the snow. My wife wasn't a a great driver so she would ding other cars in the parking lot, bumped into a garbage truck and that type of stuff. Well, it quickly started to rust. Soon the car looked like it had leprosy. As I neared the end of college I was pop riveting patches to my floor boards and quarter panels. Then the hatch back got so rusted I didn't dare open it because it felt like it would drop off. Finally, the summer after I graduated, the engine quit (that might have been my fault).

Well, it just so happened that around that time my Dad gave a me boat and I needed a mooring to put it in the harbor. A couple of my buddies who are fisherman and myself yanked the engine/tranny, towed it to the dock (I lived in very small town then), took off the wheels and cut a big whole in the roof. Then a local fellow with cemet mixer truck came down and dumped a load of cement in it. We took it out in the harbor, hook the chain to it and thru it over the side.

It worked great for a mooring. I think Ford would have been pleased. A local guy dived down the next summer and said it had almost rusted completely away. What a shame!

My worst car.

1969 AMC Ambassador Reverse gear in Auto transmission was horrible.
I couldn't afford the service so i bought three used trnasmissions over the next 6 months from the scap yard before finding the last one which finally worked. No recoup on the countless hours I spent installing transmissions.

1970 2+2 convertible The car was from Ontario and after storing in a barn for 4 years it became a rust bucket. One day the car filled with smoke. When i stopped it cleared. 10 minutes later the cars full of smoke again. I stopped lifted out the back seat and the exhaust had burned clean through the floor and was igniting under side of the rear seat.
It was actually a pretty cool car. I dropped the Olds Rocket 350 and trany into it. (Original motor burned oil) I had to lengthin the drive shaft. the car would idle bom bom bom bom at 30mph. I was fully loaded doing 80mph across the praries making 22mpg. The Ford Mustang 11 driven by my G=friend that had to keep up was filling up 2 to my 1..LOL!!

There have been several:
The Plymouth Arrow - it would lose speed climbing the smallest of hills....big fun in traffic.
Dodge Omni - one thing after another with the final straw being the tailpipe blowing off it's mounts and wedging itself in between the top of the rear axle & the right rear wheel assy. causing the car to INSTANTLY stop.
And finally, some 70's Olds Cutlass that we scored for $200 to replace the Omni. Now that was a smart move......lasted all of about 3 months.
The best car (I know I'm getting off of the subject here) was, believe it or not, a '86 Chevy Cavalier hatchback. Died in a snowstorm in '92 with 498,285 miles on it with the original battery! Timing belt? Oh, I was supposed to replace that?
