Chicago Area AutoCross 4/18/09
Re: Chicago Area AutoCross 4/18/09
Great first event to the year. Overall I'm happy with the XF handling. The gearing coulden't have worked out more perfectly, it was 2nd gear all around. With the T/C set to off (no fuse pulling) it was very un-intrusive (except of the line but if you launched gently it was actually faster) Slalom speed was quick but on the fast entries the car had a tendancy to understeer. The understeer in slow sharp corners is what I'd like to get sorted. The roll looks very rough but I actually like it and was happy with the characteristic of setting the car up for corners. I did feel the ABS kicked in too early and too much though.
P.S. One more thought, at speed and under braking, and in the turns, I was very un-eased and unhappy with the feel of the steering while going over bumps. The bumps felt like they had an effect on the wheels, which just translated into a vague nudge on the steering wheel. Felt like everything in the suspension was loose.

KitFox,
Absolutely awesome Dude!
Great pictures; how did you do?
However you placed it looked like you had a blast!
Maybe I will have to join you the next time. Will they let me run with a Roadster? Nice job bud.
Stay safe...
Respectfully,

I'm running UHP All-season tires swapped from the Max Perf summer tires which were getting old. I don't plan on going to R compounds as this is my DD and just I want to know what I can predict handling wise day to day. Thank you for your kind offer though RIOT.
Re: Chicago Area AutoCross 4/18/09
I've run 2 solo 1 events and the understeer problem is what slows us down more than any other factor. If I can't choke up enough for dedicated track wheels and tires I'll put a 235 on the front with a spacer. We need more front tire. Next I would think lowering and a limited slip differential. I accelerate faster than most in my SRT6 but they kill me in the turns. Sticky tires, my friend, will make the biggest improvement of all.

I have some success running my daily driver 2005 Limited in a local MBCA club autocross in DS class. These cars can be competitive. In my club I placed 2nd in DS and 5th overall in 2008. This event is not SCCA level but still competitive. I only lost to instructors that drove a R32, SVT Cobra, Porsche Cayman and a 280 hp Civic Si race car. Most of my events have been on BFG KDWlls. This a fabulous street tire but too hard for autocrossing and will add to the understeer issues. 2009 I will be running dedicated A6 Hoosiers with a 285 on the front! In my last event it really helped the front but with good technigue even street tires can be competitive.
Send me a PM if you need more information.
