Raced my friends rx8 and won
Ok so my buddy got a 2004 rx8 6spd and he wanted to give it a little go so, we pulled onto an on ramp and hit it till about 70 to get on the highway, i always thought rx8 0-60 was sapposed to be around 5.8 or 6 secs my crossfire is an auto but i was able to pull almost 2 car lenghts till 70, Car and driver i think said the xfire 0-60 was only 7.1 secs and i have never really accepted that. just thought it was interesting
rx-8 should most definetly be the quicker car. crossfires do 0-60 in 6.5 with auto trans and 5.8 with manual. rx8 with manual does it in 5.9. im thinking you won with pure torque. you where already doing about 30-40 on the on ramp right? crossfires pump out about 229 and the rx8 has 169. from a dead stop he definitely would have won if he didn't miss shift.... good job anyways.
Go to any "street legal" drag races (that's the term used at the drag strip in Fontana for days when you just bring your road legal, registered vehicle and run it) and you'll see all kinds of people who can't drive.
My little turbo PT Cruiser has beaten so many cars that "the magazines" say are faster than it is (I run low 14s), so whenever I mention it online there are always disbelievers. But I didn't race a magazine, I raced a real person. Who obviously couldn't drive. But you don't get a time bonus because "the magazine" says your car is faster than mine. Unless all you ever do is bench racing, but that's no fun.
Oh, and a friend of mine has a PT Turbo that runs the 1/4 in 14 flat, and I know my Crossfire can't do that. Well, "the magazines" say it can't but I haven't run it at the drag strip (no real interest in doing so). But I have raced that very same 14 second PT from a 50mph roll in my Crossfire....... and blew it out of the water. Just walked away from it.

RX-8s are turds. Don't care, manual or automatic. Just like Neon SRT4s. Not matter how much you polish a turd, it's still a turd. Those new RENESIS motors are total junk. You get a 2nd gen RX7 and you have a beast out of the box. That's why those command such high prices even today almost 15-20 years later.
Before someone jumps on me, I meant the twin turbo RX-7. Those rotary motors really eat up boost.
Some kid came in the shop early winter this year. He said that he's pushing 35 psi of boost. DOn't know or care, but when the shop foreman drove me around in it, I felt like I was in NASA's Barony Chair.
Holy hell!!!

There are two versions of the rx8. One of which has a weak *** motor. Also... They are difficult to keep on the powerband. More so than the s2000. An average driver would probably run 15.2 ish on that car.
The AT RX-8 has 197 HP and the manual has 238 HP. You pay $1000 more for the manual which only has 41 HP more. I say if you want a Mazda get yourself a Miata. Most reliable roadster to date.
They're fun cars to toss around in the twisties... when they're not in the shop.
As an earlier poster stated, the latest version of the rotary is garbage.
As for competition, I absolutely walked one a few weeks back. No contest whatsoever.
Either I'm an excellent driver, or he's a horrible one, or the car is that much of a dog. His was 6-speed, by the way.

My source is the shop foreman who can swap them in 3 hours when warranty pays 12.5.
That's how much practice he has doing them.
Whether that's good or bad, I'll let you decide.

What is even funnier, is he always compares our cars, like they are similar. I have a strong feeling if a stock XF can walk them, I will have no problems with his little OEM rotary motor
Johnny (shop foreman) said he once replaced a motor, and during the engine breakin once replaced, the No.2 rotor went out on the fresh motor within the 1st 25 min. Had to replace a REPLACED motor!!
Now rotary in general aren't junk. They're pretty cool. The only thing that limits them is the crank. If you can get a crank made long enough, hell you could get a tri-rotor, quad rotor, etc. The housings just bolt together like a jigsaw puzzle.
The owner, Bob Mears, is building an airplane, a Spitfire replica, and he's putting in a tri-rotor engine in it.
That should be cool.
