Unhappy Classless Crossfire Racing

I've been trying to get answers from the major sports car sanctioning bodies as to the home class for the Crossfire and have only gotten one response so far from the National Auto Sport Association NASA. which stated:

"We don't have a specific class where the car would fit, but you can run it
in our Super Unlimited (SU) class where the only requirements are proper
safety equipment such as a roll cage, competition seatbelts, and other gear.
SU is home to a variety of cars, so I don't know how competitive the car
would be, but at least you'd be able to come out and race with us".

Yeah, right!!! SU "Super Unlimited" with full race prepped Vipers and Z06's etc... LOL... I'd be a hazard on the same track with those guys...

The only classification I have found so far is for SCCA SOLO II which puts the car in DS or DSP class depending on the mods.. But SOLO racing is basically individual time trails, chasing cones in parking lots. Not fun, I've been running road courses for 20+ years...

SCCA, and IMSA have not yet responded to my query for a club racing category...

So, I guess for the time being I'll have to stick with Track Days with the various non-sanctioned groups that I run with... I'll keep everyone informed with what transpires...

You would probably be the only racing spec crossfire.

You're probably right, but they don't even have the specs... What a shame!!!

Derek, Wouldn't a Crossfire be in the same class as a Mercedes SLK? Or don't they have classes for them either?
I'm not trying to pretend I know anything about how SCCA or IMSA goes about classifying cars, but wouldn't they just look at the Factory specs. of the cars and go from there? Putting them in the same "class" with other cars with similar H.P. and weight.
Maybe it's all more complicated than that, but that's how they do it at the drags.
If they don't have the "specs." for our car, why don't you FAX them a copy of any automotive magazines road test, since obviously these sanctioning bodies can't seem to do there own home work. How sad.

Ah... You would think... But alas, no class or specs. for the SLK either... Lots of Sports Sedans GT1, GT2, GT3 and older cars etc. but no Crossfire... I requested that they develop class specs. for the car, but it may take awhile knowing the SCCA governing body...

The car could run in "Showroom Stock" category based on HP weight ratio but that means "No modifications". I'm looking for specs. for the GT classes, highly modified. In other words, we're planning on gutting the car completely and turning it into a full-time racer... We've got a local sponsor who's willing to foot the bill to campaign the car as soon as we find a home class for it...

How about the touring class? I always thought that meant pretty much stock with some engine/suspension mods allowed.

BOBS: No spec. for Touring, Improved Touring or Sports Racer either... They would be good classes for the car, but they don't have spec. for it yet... Without the spec. I won't know if my mods. qualify or not...

That's what I've been requesting from them...

Derek, would it do any good if "more" people contacted these organizations, as if they wanted to build a Crossfire or an SLK to race? Do you think that would speed them up? ...Mike

+fireamx: Thanks for the post. Perhaps it may speed-up the process... Here is the email of the club racing competition mgr. for SCCA, Brian Cohn bcohn@scca.com

Just drop him a note saying that you are considering club racing the Crossfire but cannot find the specs. or classification for the car aside from SOLO.

That may help if he starts getting more queries aside from mine... Thanks...

Looks like I might be getting closer to the answers to my questions from the SCCA. Here's the most recent e-mail.

Hello Derek,

John will need to address this question as no one has inquired about racing Crossfires at this time. He is in town till mid day tomorrow, so hopefully he can get some kind of info to you.
