Angry Stupid "check engine" light

This is really starting to bug me. I've had my '04 coupe for a total of six weeks now. In that time, the "check engine" light has come on a total of three times. In each instance I've scheduled maintenance but by the time the appointment rolls around, the light has gone off. The techs can't determine what's wrong. When it comes on, it stays on for a period of about two days before going off. Anyone have any ideas what might cause this? I've had the same type of idiot light on other vehicles and it seems to be related somehow to the exhaust system. I had one car in particular where the light would come on if the gas cap was just a little loose. (believe me, that's the first thing I checked on the Crossfire).

On a related note, I live in the Twin Cities metro area. We're not exactly in the sticks here but I think we have only two certified Crossfire technicians in the entire area and it seems like you literally have to book these guys a week or more in advance to get your car looked at. Do people in other areas have this problem too? I like my car and all but there's definitely a hassle factor when it comes to maintenance.

Thanks for any and all advice!
Steve

Next time it comes on go to somewhere like Autozone - I think they still do free diagnostic checks.

I guarantee somebody says 'Check your gas cap'.
That should have been the first line of your message - not embedded somewhere.

The dealer will still get a code even if the light is out. If the code is for the secondary cooling fan. Get them to change the relay module under the hood. It is a common problem. That is what Chrysler tech. support had my dealer change. No faults anymore.

Thanks guys. AMGlover, thanks for the tip on the service manual. That's going to come in very handy I think.

The relay is in the covered box under the hood on the passenger side. I think it is under all the connectors in the box.
