Default Polishing and Gasket matching part 3 dressing up the air box

I took about 4 hours (total), polished and gasket matched the intake pipes, head and Y pipe of my srt and wanted to pass on the steps. This was easy work with a die grinder and air compressor without getting under the car. Basically I wanted to reduce the restrictions and improve the flow of air in the intake system. I will break the process it into different threads to provide more detail. Y pipe, Air Boxes, and Heads.

My term Airbox, that thinggy that has SRT cast into it that passes the compressor air out to the heads......

I took the parts off in this order.
Pull the air filter boxes and then Pull the BLACK plastic compressor throttle body inlet housing: 2 clips, a bit of a twist after clipping/releasing the 2 housing plastic clips.
Pull the airboxes (6) screws and 1 hose clamp each.

The Y is accessable now, three hose clamps and a sensor (caution sensor is fragile)

Take you time and LOOK before jumping in, recommend having a shop manual to assist your understanding of the parts/ steps.

Photos attached:

Airbox COVER This shows air box painted with textured Rustoleum black to accent the cover as Iam getting a needswing intake pipe and wanted a better LOOK. The black goes with my car and it may aid the radiation of heat.

Airbox COVER 2 Shows the airbox with the paint brushed off by a clean-up wheel. This gives a great look to the aluminum and sets the airbox off nicely. Practice o some old aluminum and move from one side to the other is a steady manner to ge the best effect.

Iam also posting more threads on cleaning up the airbox inlet and heads which I also did in this 4 hours effort.

I plan to do another bit on adding springs and the pully as well as the heat exchanger.

Are these posts of interest and or useful, please let me know,Thanks Woody

These posts are EXCELLENT Woody...keep 'em coming!

I'm afraid, however, that a lot of the SRT guys aren't responding because they are not seeing them. Try posting them in the SRT forum (even though they are Tech).

Also, Let me know how that paint holds up. Those boxes get awfully hot and I have wanted to paint them...but was worried that the paint would fade/burn.

Ill list them in the srt section when I fininsh the 4 step. Thanks for the good words.

The boxes do not get too hot as the intercooler cools the air charge, the only real heat is from the motor and its not too much. Being a car guy I did not wanna wait to let the paint dry so I put a MAPP torch inside to force the drying and they were over 250 degrees, paint is ok at that point.

Next installment is the part about the polishing of the passages in the airbox, Woody

Keep us posted - it looks great! The boxes on my car get really hot...hot enough to hurt when you touch them, no doubt.

Thoes boxes are your intake manifold and heat is a bad thing, this is why LET sells phenolic intake gaskets to limit heat soaking into the box. I did black to assist appearance and the little gain from black body radiation. The lower half is not painted.

I also removed the hood insulation to allow better cooling of the motor and also allow some of the engine sounds to leak out a bit, being a squirrel at heart.

Check Let for a photo of the gaskets, a simple installation to do, Woody
