Default "High Oil" light

Just got back from getting the oil changed at the dealer. When pulling up to the house, the High Oil light came on. I assume this means they put in too much oil. Should I do anything or will it burn off the excess?

it says right on the oil cap that too much oil can damage the engine. i would go back to the dealer and make them check it out. remind them that it takes 8.5 quarts. maybe they added nine.they will certainly have some sort of topsider which would make it easy for them to suck some out.

Actually when I change my own oil and filter 8 quarts even fills her right to full on the stick. This reading is after the car is run, warmed up and off for several hours. It also reads OK on the cluster.
Oil will not burn off and may do damage if left overfilled.

Well, the wife went by the dealership on her way to the office this morning. 45 minutes later she got the car back with the excess oil removed. What a hassle. I'm now in the market for a topsider to change the oil myself (which I used to always do on previous cars).

The same thing happened to our Mercedes. We ended up taking it back to the dealer to either drain or fix the sending unit. My Crossfire did it right before the last oil change. Quite frankly I like the idea of a dipstick, I mean how freakin hard is it? Glad you are squared away.

this just happened to me 2 days ago. I took it back and they drained an extra 2 quarts out of my car. I ended up getting my money back

2 quarts over? Wow! Our receipt showed they put in 9 quarts. I figured they rounded up from 8.5 quarts. I wasn't going to quibble over the cost over the cost of a half quart. But this experience does make me want to start getting back into changing the oil myself.

Now, topsider or draining it from the bottom? There are lots of good points on each side of this subject here (after doing many searches) but I've still not decided which way to go.

I have also found that 8 quarts seems to be plenty, filling the dip stick to the full mark.

I only put 8 qts. in mine when ever I change it. Never had any problems. It's usually better to be a little under than over when you're talking oil.

after that experience I am never going to take my car anywhere but my garage for an oil change. I prefer draining from the bottom.

I agree . . . change the oil yourself if you can !! It is way too easy to do. . . hardest thing was getting the belly pan off to get to the oil pan and drain plug !! Love how easy the filter is to take out and replace. No way I am going to pay the prices they want at the dealership or oil change place when I can do it for less - using MOPAR(Mercedes) oil filter and Mobil One, still about $30-40 less !!! Only 1 hour out of my day (at the MOST) and best of all, get to play with my baby !!!

If the level is high enough in the pan, the crankshaft will contact the oil and whip it into a froth-think CoolWhip. This can't be pumped, so you will run with the same thing as a dry sump-no oil circulation. No Bueno!

When you change oil in a car without it the pan being dropped there is still a bit left in the engine. A brand new engine takes the 8.5 but when we do changes we dont get every ounce out so its a little over 8 to refill.

I bought a Topsider and I tried it on my worn out daily driver first.

I hated it.

I drain from the bottom. Gives me a chance to check everything under the car while I'm down there anyway.

8 qts and drive for a few days, check it, add any as needed.

I used the topsider type(hooked up to my compressor) and when I refill it take 8.5 quarts. I put in 8 and run it to get things circulated and then shut it off and let it set and re-check the dipstick. Then top off.

Same thing happened to me a couple months ago. They put in 8.5 quarts and had to take out 1/2 quart when I took it back. I checked it a week later and it was filled to the top of the dip stick. Odd, since pretty much every reference I can find says that it takes 8.5.
