Default Clutch Replacement Question

Ok this question isn't about my crossfire... it's about another car me and my friend are working on (1989 honda prelude)

So the clutch needs replacing desperately in this car, and since we're autocross-race tuning the car for our senior project, we figured we should put in a racing clutch if we have to replace it anyway...

here is the question: when replacing a clutch, is it advised / necessary to pull out the engine?

Generally no,

Go to the local library, and go on alldata web site, print out the pages you need about 10 cents a page, I am sure you need to pull the axles, struts, and trany, pretty involved, it all comes out the bottom.
good luck

well the car is so low to the ground, it would be very hard to pull off the axles etc... so could pulling the engine out provide the space needed to work on the clutch? or are we going to need to find a lift that will allow us to removie axles, suspension, etc to get to the tranny

I think pulling the engine would be the hard way!

DO NOT PULL the engine. I have had many fast civics and I have done a lot of clutch jobs is the past. What you do is yank the axles and the linkage and accesories drop the top tranny mount and tilt the engine and then pull the trans. be very careful when you take it out not to put any weight on the shaft. PM if you need more details I can talk you through it

You can also easily do this in a driveway. With 2 competant guys you can bang it out in 3 hours

awesome. how high do we need to lift the car to be able to take all that stuff out and drop the tranny? would jack stands be sufficient, or do we need more room than that

and I might take you up on that walking us through it... we won't be doing this for another week or 2, with spring break next week and all, but I'm looking in to what we're going to have to do

awesome, my friend should be buying the clutch this weekend hopefully. I'm going to be out of town next week for spring break, but starting the 23rd, we're going to be working on that car every monday wednesday and friday for a few hours every day.

its our senior project, and we get half days every single day 4th quarter to work on senior projects

o yeah, and today was my last full day of school EVER!
