Default Out of Gear???

Test drove a 2004 base Crossfire with the 5-spd automatic. Question is, what would cause it to do this: was heading downhill into a left turn and was accelerating, let up a bit as I went into a right turn uphill, but then I accelerating a bit to go up the hill, the car jerked like a rear tire locked up, then when I went to accelerate again it seemed like the car was in neutral (dumb me, why didn't I look at what gear the car said I was in), the engine would rev but it almost seemed like it wouldn't go anywhere (though it was, however downhill), I pulled the car off the road at what seemed like 2 miles from where it did this (it had not gone away), I put it in park and checked for warning lights, which there were none, backed up fine, pulled back into the road, stopped to check for light again, but everything was fine there after. I actually went back around to see if I could make it do that again, but no dice. Has anyone else experienced this? Could this have been "Limp" mode? It seemed odd how the car kept going but there was no since that any power was being put to the ground.

So it kinda acted like it was in neutral? Were you auto-sticking it or just driving with the tranny in "D"?

Yes, it acted just like it was in neutral. I had it in "D". The car only has 22k miles on it.

I also have a 2004 Crossfire, and have experienced the same thing. It has gone into limp mode numerous times, either after acclerating out of a sharp corner at low speed, or occasionally from a standing start. I have learned to just pull off the road, turn the car off and start it up again. It seems like limp home mode as it will not shift out of second gear. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like your "Traction Control" is acting up. If your tires break loose even for a fraction of a second, the computer shuts ya down. But usually ony for a moment, then it should let you continue on normally. It can be very disturbing, and down right dangerous if you should happen to pull out in front of traffic (thinking you have enough time to do so safely thanks to your cars performance capabilities) only to find that because you spun your tires the computer thinks it's protecting you by stealing power.
Turn your traction control switch off, so that the "fish tailing" car on your gauges is lit up. This doesn't shut the TC down completely, but may give you a little more personal control over how your car reacts to sudden changes in terrain, and its traction.
I disconnected my traction control:

But I haven't driven my car hard enough to see if it really makes any difference. There is still something that's called a "Yaw sensor" under the consol that needs to be disconnected to totally disable the computer from interfering.

I tried with the Traction Control turned off (dash light on) but when I accelerated out of a corner and started uphill, went back to limp mode, would not shift up to third gear. I stopped, shut it off, restarted and went on my way without the problem. You mentioned the Yaw sensor, could that be the cause? It does seem to do it when accelerating and slight leaning because of a curve. Will try most anything at this point. Thanks

I had the same happen to me on a few occasion. I took it to the dealership and found the car was leaking transmission fluids. After repairing the leak which was minor and replacing the fluid the car runs fine and I have not had the problem since. hope this helps.

Test drove a 2004 base Crossfire with the 5-spd automatic
run, don't walk away from this car.

Some earlier XF's had an issue with the Auto Tranny where it would literally "leap" out of drive into neutral.

When Jeremy Clarkson reviewed the Crossfire on Top Gear, James May drove it also and found that the test car had this exact same problem.

My best advice is to stay away from this particular car, it is a lemon.

there are plenty of good deals out there. No sence buying one starting out with problem. The crossfire is awesome in my opinion but parts are not cheap.

Is there any way to check the transmission fluid? The owner's manual says no. I have not seen any leaks under the car where I park it. I have owned the car for 4 years now, has 49,700 miles on it, but this problem has only been happening the last few months, though it is getting more frequent.
