Exclamation Abnormally low gas mileage

Hey, [Abnormally low GAS**** MILEAGE**** sry....]
I just got an 04' Xfire AT w/ 26k miles on it. Oil needs changing along with a new filter (fleece, I know) and I wanted to know if that is maybe the only reason i'm getting about 13mpg... I've been using an immensely light foot with it to see if it yields better performance in MPG with no avail.

Any advice?

Cheers!

I doubt that needing an oil change will cause that. I drive somewhere between grandpa and enthusiastic and I still get 21 to 22 in town with a stick.

I wouldn't think that spark plugs or the fuel filter would be bad at 26,000 miles. I'm no mechanic by any means, but first off I would check the air filter to see if it is dirty or clogged. Maybe someone else here has any more ideas.

The mpg on mine slowly started dropping around 30,000 miles - never got lower than 19 mpg, but it normally was getting 24 mpg. I changed the plugs and wires with irridium plugs and Magnecor wires and it jumped right back up to normal. When I inspected the old plugs and wires, I couldn't see anything wrong, but there must have been something...

I have 47,000 miles with the original plugs, wires and battery and I get great mileage and it runs perfectly. Probably not going to be safe with that battery soon though.

Are there signs I can look for that would indicate a bad air filter? Also, any good names or part #s I should look for to replace it?

Just take them off and look at them. Dirty you can see, besides it doesn't hurt to change them every once and a while. I have K & N replacement filters I can't remember the part #. I got them on ebay, you can look the number up on K & N's website. However stock one's will do nicely at cheaper cost you can get them almost anywhere. Remember that there are two of them.

~ most likely 2 really dirty air filters...

an ebay link for 2 k&n filters: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/04-05...Q5fAccessories

also i would use premium fuel as intended.

No problem at all - they were the spark plug wires...

I got them from NeedsWings here:

Product Category Listing

I got the Magnecor KV85 8.5mm Competition Ignition Cables and NGK Iridium IX Spark Plug Set (1 heat range colder).

Yeah it actually looked like there was sand in the air filter and debris from some wild forest...those F*#ckers were DIRTY! Hopefully that was my problem...

For sure! Although can some dirty air filters really cause such a dramatic loss in MPG?

Went I replaced my OEM air filters with K&N, mileage dropped about 10%. Went from 20 city to 18 and 25 HW to 22. Have since, at five years and 35K, had the fuel filter changed as well as trans service. No difference. I'm thinking of going back to the paper filter just to see if it makes a difference.

Yes, they can.

Remember, if the air filters aren't clean, the engine strains to run properly, and if they are bad enough, the computer is slow in adjusting the fuel mixture, which means you are running richer than you typically would be, anytime you change throttle positions.

You need new filters, if you haven't replaced them already.

New spark plugs and wires might be something to consider in the future, but not needed for a bit.

BC.
