Default Highway fuel mileage since Chip and K&N

Hello all,

I just got back from my trip to Ft. Bragg (about 500 miles round trip) and I have good news about fuel mileage since the chip. I checked it both to and from and it was the same.... 28.62 mpg... Before the chip with with just the K&N filters I was getting right at 27 mpg. Hwy... 1.6 mpg with the chip is more than I had hoped for.

I've only had two full tank fills since getting chipped. No K&N's (yet). On those two tankfull's my mileage was up just a hair over 1 mpg (probably about a 50/50 mix of open road/city driving). Where I was getting ~22.3 - 22.5, those two tanks were 23.7 and 23.8 respectively.

I made up a quick 'n easy excel spreadsheet for tracking my fuel usage, fuel cost, effective price/gallon (for when I use the Shell card and get 5% back), mpg, and fuel cost per mile. If anyone wants it, drop a PM and I'll email it to you.

Yeah, that's what a chip will do to your car if you can resist the urge to hit the throttle wide-open off of every stop. The extra power it gives you means the engine can shift lower and ride at a lower RPM while giving the same power, meaning you use less fuel.

I suppose if the mileage increase is just an icing on the performance cake, a 5% - 6% improvement is great.

But it is not enough of a reason to do the chip upgrade for just a mileage improvement. It would take 5 years to just get to the payback point of the $400.00 upgrade, based on 1 tank of fuel per week at $1.90 per gallon.

Bummer....

I was already happy with the mileage. Since I'm autocrossing I wanted the power increase.... The mileage is a very pleasant by-product.

Did anyone with the chip notice a HP gain?
K&N's? Does it remove the top speed limiter (set at 129 mph I was told)?

Thanks, Kenny

You'll probably lose mileage in city driving, though.

My city mpg (or a mix of 60% Hwy 40% city was right at 23 mpg now just a tick below 25 mpg.

krwkenny... A better question would be... "Anyone with a chip NOT notice an increase in HP?"

Yes, the power change is noticeable.

Default speed limiter

Hey Kenny.
I don't know when the speed limiter kicks in, but I've had my stock (unchiped) XF to 145 and ran out of room and had to slow down. It's hard to find the top end in Jersey.

The ECU restricts speed to no faster than 150 mph.
