Anything on the front sides are illegal the rear can be as dark as you want, well at least here in Michigan it is!

I don't know what the percentages are, but if you are going to a tint shop, they should surely know. We have had every one of our cars tinted, and each time the tint shop knew exactly what the laws were for our state.

i know what the laws are here in wisconsin, but i also know the windows are slightly factory tinted. the law here is 50% for the sides (35% for the rear)...but adding a 50% film to the existing factory tint would push it over the legal 50% limit...know what i mean? so that's why i was wondering if anyone knew the factory tint in case the shop doesn't.

A decent tint shop will have the same exact "tint meter" the cops and inspectors use, will measure your existing tint, and only apply enough tint to bring you up to (or just under) the legal limit.

OK, here's what I'm wondering. If the tint on the windows is legal in the state where my car is registered, in my case Arizona, and I drive to Michigan where that particular tint is illegal, can the Michigan authorities legally write me a ticket (I'm certain they would want to do the right thing either way :? ), or am I entitled to "full faith and credit" for my state's laws where my car is legal and registered? Otherwise, it would be pretty hazardous driving from state to state, impairing interstate commerce and all that you know.

I started wondering about this because someone on this forum, I think AZXFIRE, said he went to California and a Chip Officer wrote him up with a warning. Of course, using that as an example assumes his tint is legal in AZ, his home state  .

I think there's a law that in such cases you are to abide by your home-state's laws if you're passing through other states, but don't take my word for it.

I know that in this part of OH, there is no inspection, and alot of people mod up the wheels, tires, exhaust, you name it. But when they cross over into PA, they do get tickets, especially for loud exhausts, or tires that stick way out from the wheel wells.

The tint I had on that car was illegal even in AZ, the CA Chips gave me a warning and sent me on my way. Windows that are too dark are overlooked by law enforcement here in Arizona as is just about every other thing you can imagine being done to your vehicle.

As for having windows tinted to the legal AZ limit and then driving somewhere else... the good faith and credit applies. If you do get zapped by some local smokie in another state, have it inspected by DPS, get a letter stateing your tint is legal and send it back to the out of state court where you got the ticket. That should take care of it.
