Default Caliper paint?

I'm planning on painting my calipers and am having a hard time deciding on a color! With so many to choose from right now I'm thinking about doing yellow I think with the black wheels it will look great... But with the silver trim left on the car Im considering going silver however, I'm not sure silver will draw in any watchful eyes and thats kind of the point!

me too. check my gallery and you can see what the yellow looks like at least. Orange would look nice n the black too, and also a royal blue, like Ford blue.

Red, it'll blend with your taillights.

Why caliper paint? Isn't it just heat paint? I used ordinary heat paint 2 years ago and it still looks good. I just couldn't justify $35.00 per can for the same product in a different can for $7.95.

Paint all of the silver pieces yellow too!!

That's what I'm planning on doing (except my strakes/door handles are black because I have a base model), but in orange.

Or if you're not hip to that idea... find someone with a black base model willing to part with their strakes/door handles, or paint yours to match your paint! The possibilities are endless!!!!!!

P.S. Lots of pictures when you are done, please!

Your car is, obviously, all black with silver trim so adding another color will effectively make the parts jump out and shout "hey, look at me, I'm a caliper!!!!"

Now, that's all fine and well if that's what you're after. But to me, blacking out a car as much as you have already means you want that stealth sorta look all around. I'd either go silver with a black decal or black with a silver decal of some sort. On my own car I went semi-gloss and had a Chrysler decal made up at a local store.

Of course I could be completely off with my thoughts mentioned above, so if you like/want a brightly colored caliper, then go for it. I like the idea of a splash of red up front to balance out the splash of red that is the tail lights out back as opposed to adding another color to the mix. But that's just me.

Depends on what you are going for. Here are a few examples...

On my first XF, since the wheels were so full (not too open to see through) like yours, I went with something that would blend and not scream at you, silver.

It kind of bothered me that you could not see them well, even at speed. With the new coupe, I decided to do wheels that would set off the calipers much more, and I painted them an orange/red hue that I liked.

What I like most it when I am at speed, and you can see those beautiful things staring at you. Lots more people are noticing them as well. With your black wheels, I think something kind of loud might be cool, but as others have said, you need to add other details or paint things to tie it all together and not make it look like you are just adding random colors wherever, more of a theme.

If you can not tell, I LOVE the new AMG setup

I think your on to somthing with the stealth look! I wasn't sure about the black wheels to begin with and regreted the choice I made to buy them right after I did!! But, once I got them on the car I love them! I do like what you have done with yours and I think I'm going to do Yellow on one and see what it looks like and if I don't like it ill paint over it black. What is that decal made out of that its not melting? I do a few track weekends a year and I would think after a few laps they would melt off!

Funny thing about those decals, and the paint for that matter as well - there is absolutely nothing unique about either. I don't even think the paint is technically a high heat paint, if I remember right. I know when I painted the wheels on my Miata I just regular old Rustoleum and I had zero issues - about $3 for the can. And I did plenty of hard charging canyon runs in that little car. As for the Crossfire, I've done a few track day weekends as well, with not a hint of problem. What's crazy is the ONLY painted calipers I've ever had issue with are the ONLY calipers I've ever used a two part high heat caliper specific paint - about $38 for the can. Those have exhibited plenty of paint loss over the years for some weird reason. The decals are just a standard old vinyl that you see in any decal shop. I did not spray any clear over the decals on the Crossfire, but tested it on my wife's car. The edge of the decal lifted ever so slightly when the clear was shot on, but you have to look close to see it. Still, they're holding up with no issue, but then again she never pushes her car very hard at all.

Up here at Canadian tire the heat paint is rated for 500F where as the Caliper Paint is 900F. both cans are under 12 bucks.

Two years ago I painted my brake hardware with just regular $3 silver metallic. I also applied decals. All I did was spray brake clean on them, blew them dry with compressed air, then painted. Just last week, I took them apart for the first time to replace the brake pads and repaint yellow. The silver still looked good enough to leave alone if wanted. That paint made about 8 passes through the Dragon with no trouble.

This time I used high temp engine paint with high temp primer and high temp clear after I applied the decals. The paint can had "ceramic formula" on it and was good up to 500°. I suspect I will not have a problem with the paint. Most important part is the prep. From previous times, the high temp paint will adhere and cover much better using the proper primer.

Good luck. Remember that any color you choose can be changed very easily if you don't like.

John, those red calipers look great behind those wide open wheels. I think a touch of white lettering on them would set them off greatly. James

Check my Gallery and you can see the Red with the wheels off. Only hand Painted, the weather was too hot, and I was too lazy to do it properly.

Just changed mine from red (sig pic) to black for a less in your face look. Masked off and sprayed them with brush touch to get the little spots. Just hi temp engine paint

Thanks!

I am not 100% sure the style number, it took me over 6 months to convince a wheel retailer to sell me 2 of the 18s and 2 of the 20s and he has since gone out of business. If you see the exact same wheels, please let me know as I would like to buy a spare set....
