Default K & N Cotton Air Filters - Best Replacement NA ?

Until I buy my Needswings Dual CAI's..........I am putting new air filters in my NA Coupe. I'm just turning 20K miles on the car and was reading this car will breath much better with these than the OEM's. I'm not even sure the OEMs need replacing but I would expect after 20K miles I ought to make the switch.

I was reading the K and N filters are higher air flow and this simple replacement actually has a noticeable difference in throttle response. What are others experience with this simple switch? Also, do others have suggestions for better / higher flow filters (that still protect the intake)?

Thanks.

I put them in, noticed very little, if anything, even after a throttle reset.

I did a DIY dual intake and noticed a huge difference. I wished I would have saved the money, but at 20K you need them anyway.

Let us know what you think....

I should have them in a couple days. I'll let you know if I notice any changes in response.

BTW, what DIY approach did you take on you dual intakes. Did you just use larger intake tubes and move filters out to the grill area? A brief explanation would be great.

Thanks.

Max and I designed and built our own intakes, picture below.

We were not happy with the filter being as exposed as they are in some of the setups and wanted them safely tucked in the engine bay, but heat soak is an issue. We ended up using spectre canister race filters. They flowed better than the filters others were using and being enclosed was key. We can true 3" piping for the entire thing. I do not have any pictures of my new setup, but here is the nearly identicle finished product on my last crossfire....

I just replaced my original Mann Filters with the K&N's at 15K on the odometer.

The K&N lists much higher airflow than typical, but to be honest it was hard to tell if I experienced a significant boost, although mentally I felt good about it...

I'm guessing if your existing setup showed excessive dirt or airflow restriction, new K&N's would come shining thru.

My originals were pretty clean, but I changed them anyway cause I'm a fanatic when it comes to my cars...

(It really is a sickness...lol...)

Also remember, you buy'em once, and with good care and a recharge, I think they're rated for 200k, or was that 100k...

Thanks Kodebuster, that's pretty much the way I feel. If they provide real or perceived response......I guess I'll still feel better that they are changed and have my filter set for the life of the vehicle (until / unless I put in the needswings dual CAI).

As far as the warranty, they are actually warranteed to 1 MILLION MILES.

Cool set up. Was the primary change the size of the intake tubes? What type of metal was used?

Thanks for the picture and the info. It definitely has me thinking.......

The primary change is not only the larger tubing, but also losing the restrictive factory setup and going with filters that flow 2-3x as much air.

We used stainless to weld the y-pipe and bent aluminum tubing for the rest.

It flows so well that when I got it, I put my hand in front of the grill and could feel the thing sucking air at idle, something I never felt with the factory setup. I have no idea what kind of gains I get, but after extensively modding 2 XFs, the gains are pretty severe for an intake. I would put it in the same ballpark as getting a tune, nice gains either way. Good luck.

Thanks bro.

Spectre Part #9833, should be able to find them pretty easy. I bought mine at Jegs.

Put my K & N's on at 25 K, now at 50 K. No difference in power. Mileage dropped 1 MPG. Going to take them off and see if the mileage comes back.

Have you done the clean and oiling kit?

If not, that is more than likely why you are dropping MPGs, I believe they are supposed to be done every 5-10K depending on driving conditions...

That Y pipe looks bigger and less restrictive than your other set up. Looks really good. I saw the filters on line for about $55 each. It doesn't say if they are low restriction but I'm assuming they are. Are there replaceable inserts or can you just remove and clean?

The spectre filter flows very well, we did some serious research before arriving at this setup, and, as you noticed, continue to tweak it regularly. They flow as well or better than a standard size K&N cone and are much better protected.

I have yet to get enough miles on one to figure out if I am going to need to replace or simply clean. I will take them apart one of these days and see, or call spectre and ask them....

Finally got mine all put togther. I need to trim down some of the radiator hose so it fits more evenly.

I painted my valve covers while i had them off putting bigger injectors in. I have my grill off for the picture and because i was working on the engine, but the grill is painted white as well.

Gonna paint the manifold white someday too ?
That would look really nice, like a hospital operating room
