Default Total Shut Down?

Well.... I had the alternator replaced maybe about three mnths ago. Then maybe 3/4 days ago I had to get a jump cause the car wouldnt turn over. Took the battery out and had it charged at O'reillys where I bought it and everything seemed fine. Then yesterday on the way home the engine started to surge and I began to smell something burning, smelled electrical if that makes sense. Then on the way home I lost total power and nothing and I mean nothing works. Bad alternator? The smoke was coming from that area and I saw no visual signs of anything burnt. Talked to a couple of people and they said the inside might be fried. Any suggestions........

it could be the windings in the alternator or it could be the voltage regulator on the back of the alternator.... since you just put the alternator in it should still be under warranty.....
