Default Ignition switch

I need help ! The key of my crossfire won't turn and of course the car won't start. I had to towed the car to a mechanic ! They told me it was going to be the ignition switch , but they just called me and said they need to change the whole housing switch something ! Because they can't just change the ignition switch ! Anybody have had the same problem ! It's going to cost 1000$ does anybody could help me to see if that's about right , or maybe other way to fix it ! Would I have to take it to the dealership to code the key ? Hope anybody could help me ! Thanks
