It is the "secondary air pump"
It runs for about 30 seconds on initial start to warm up the Catalytic converters.
It is driven by a relay in the RCM module that is very prone to burning it's contacts and at times welding them together and causing that pump to run until it burns itself out.

If the pump IS burned out, the only effect will probably be annoying P codes and CEL's, the car will run OK.

Its working perfectly.

I was mainly wondering if it could be taken out so that I can turn the intake manifold around and have throttle body up front. Did a lot of research and they dont test emissions in michigan.

Thanks

Gave me a flash-back to the old 60's Brother Dave Gardner routine about Chuck and Baby : "She was doing OK, till I turned her head around".
( Still have that album )

Question is : WHY ?

If it is mechanically possible ( and that I don't know ), then there are some issues that would have to be addressed :
1. extending the throttle wiring harness
2. extending the MAF/IAT harness
3. all the vacuum lines
4. the EGR stuff

I assume you are trying to get a shorter route to cold air, right ?

If cold air is what we desire too easy to just go with Needswings D or SCAI.
Its understandable many rather create their own for a lower price. But why mess with a product that does its job very well.
HP gains is on many peoples mind.

Yea, I am looking for the cold air. I have been thinking about the needswings but having a custom setup would be really cool.

I looked again today, and noticed that there is a water hose coming straight out the front of the engine just under the air injection. Looking at the location of the throttle body at the back I am not sure its going to be possible...

Maybe a custom manifold could work, however I would loose the functionality of the different length intake horns in the stock manifold...

You want to see a custom setup - look at maxcichon's gallery .....
Hand made SS dual CAI with filters in the pipes.

I have the NW single CAI :
( the thermal wrapping is gone now )
