Default Differential rebuild

Looks like I'll be rebuilding my first differential soon. Today while taking my wife to lunch I noticed a loud rumble from 20-25mph. Hopefully it's just a bearing, anyone have any knowledge about this issue?

How hard is this to do? I have access to a lift and almost every tool under the sun I just need to know what I'm dealing with. This issue just started, I'm the third owner so I'm not sure when the differential oil was changed. If ever.

i have an extra spider gear if you're interested or you could just buy a different carrier off of ebay for under $300 shipped and save yourself a lot of labor and aggravation.

Shipping to Guam takes a couple of weeks to get things here. Can you provide a link for an 05 6spd carrier? Ebay is blocked at work.

If it's just spiders, like Anthony stated. A lot of us have those lying around...

Looks like it's going to be about $600 just to get a carrier here so I may see about rebuilding mine. Shipping is pretty steep here. Thanks for you help guys!

Also can you clarify. what are the spider gears?

Diagnosing Differential Problems | West Coast Differentials

  • A howl or whine during acceleration over a small or large speed range is usually caused by worn ring and pinion gears or improper gear set up.
  • Rumbling or whirring at speeds over about 20 mph can be caused by worn carrier bearings. The noise may change while turning.
I'm having both of these issues I guess, the howl is around 20-25mph. I haven't noticed a change in the noise while turning but still can't rule it out.

So went to the Hobby shop and put it on a lift. Took me a little while to get the cover off. I didn't notice anything broken, but what do I know about differentials?? lol

I had the head mechanic come by and there's a few wear marks he said but no chips and or burn marks he said the fluid was probably just past it's prime. So I put it all back together and filled it up with RP 75w-140 and no more noise!! The car feels so much smoother now, I never noticed how bad it was before!
