Default It looks good but it is a doorstop

So, after a particularly crap day, I am (finally!) driving home and... lo! the engine stops... just stops... while I am driving it. I got to a parking lot a few yards away and the car would start but not turn over. I tried it after an hour and it started so I drove it awhile. The "Check Engine" light came on and a few yards later, it died again. When I got it to start again, after about 40 minutes, I let it idle. The RPMs seemed normal and it ran OK, I guess, for about 15 minutes, then died.

I will not go into the odyssey of the tow truck but the car is now in the yard awaiting the wisdom of the ages to speak to this.... Is is the CPS? Is it possessed? I am so disheartened. Sigh.

Sounds exactly like my car a few weeks ago when the Crank Position Sensor went out, after the car cooled for about and hour it started back up and died again after about 5 minutes of driving. I left the car for about 8 hours and let it completely cool down and it made it all the way home about 10 miles.

It's definitely the CPS. Mine did the same exact thing. Make sure you get the Bosch with p/n 0261210170

Good price here: Mercedes Crankshaft Position Sensor - Bosch 0261210170 | FCP Euro

Should I order the Mercedes one for the same year of my car? I have an '06 Limited Roadster.

Any Mercedes parts for our cars will match the R170 chassis which came on the 2001-2004 SLK320 w/ engine type M112.947 V6 for N/A & 2001-2004 SLK32 AMG w/ engine type M112.960 for SRT6. After M/B ceased production of the R170 in 2004, the spares they had left over are what went into our Crossfires. So when searching for M/B parts that are compatable with our cars, always look for 2004 SLK320 parts for N/A and 2004 SLK32 AMG parts for SRT6.
The one I showed fits all models of the Crossfires. It's the only one that should go on our cars. Other members have had issues with off brand aftermarket CPS that would fail or not even work, but the specific Bosch one works every time.

In short, most any part in your '06 Roaster will match that of the '04 SLK320, unless it is Chrysler specific!

FYI - You can also search the M/B forum for answers in the W202 C-Class section which is what the R170 is based on.

The Mercedes part number has changed quite a few times, 003-153-28-28 should be the most current. PelicanParts.com has the Bosch sensor for $46.25

Same P/N as the one I quoted from FCP Euro for $33.95! Get a second one for backup and get Free Shipping too!
( Excellent warranty also: Guaranteed to Fit, Guaranteed for Life ).

On second thought, if it's guarenteed for life, then they'll replace it free if it goes bad again. So it should be the last one you'll ever need to buy!
Then again, who wants to be stranded waiting for the replacement. Just buy 2. That way you always have a backup if it ever goes south again, and get the free replacement one to backup the second one. Some day it'll all make sense!!

Brand: Bosch
SKU #: 0261210170
Part: Engine Crankshaft Position Sensor
OE Numbers: 0031532828, 0031532728, 0261210170, 49181
CS ID: 49181
$33.95
MSRP: $55.41

One other thing no one has mentioned is that you can pull the CPS connector off the sensor and check the pins for corrosion. Spray with contact cleaner, allow a few minutes to air dry and plug back in to see what happens. Worked for a couple of members.

I think your signature is missing some brackets.

Oh, and it's the CPS.
