Exclamation Fuel gauge problem\ Fuel level sending unit

Driving home the other day noticed fuel gauge read about half a tank. Seemed funny because thought I had just put fuel in it not to long ago. So pulled to get more gas and could only put in maybe two gallons. Ok so Fuel sending level unit is bad or at least is what I thought. Fuel tank is full gauge is reading half a tank still. Set trip meter to zero drive about 180 miles and run out of gas. WTF!!! Ideas on what the problem is ? Is the fuel tank divided ?

First thought that comes to mind is a collapsed fuel tank.

Hmmm never would have thought of this. If this is the case all I can say is **** poor design !!! Thanks for the response. I did find some info on the forum about this and find it hard to believe.

I was able to fill the tank tonight with no problem. Don't trust it now.
