If only hard to shift when the engine is running you might have a clutch that is not completely releasing.

Yeah..Seems like it's a bit easier to shift when the car is not running. I may need a clutch. Have to push the pedal to the floor to get it to shift smooth.

Clutch mot releasing properly is more likely a leaking master or slave cyl piston seal.

If you have a leaky slave cylinder then when it is pushed to the floor and you leave it there in gear, would you not find the car starts to inch forward as the cylinder leaks and let's the clutch plate move into contact with the flywheel more?
Surely the master cylinder does not enter into the equation as only the reservoir is used for the oil supply.
Maybe some springs on the clutch have broken, that has happened before here.

Thanks for the update. I have found that the shifter moves better when the car is not running. And it seems to me that the pedal needs to be pressed down a bit further to shift. Maybe it's time for a clutch. At 60,000 miles and the third owner, I do not know if it has ever been changed. And at 64 it maybe for me to sell it. Getting hard to get in and out. Craig's List Here I Come.
