Hi guys anybody try modifying the stock shocks to soften the ride ? I put some KYBs on the front and was amazed that the only thing wrong with my old ones was hardened rubber bushings and a large urethane type bumper installed to stiffen the ride ! The new shocks have no ure bumper. I may try modding my rear shocks if I find they have the bumper in them too ? New England roads are rough ! Any thoughts. ?

 

Pictures would help understand what you are talking about. A previous owner may have done some custom work on your shocks. New shocks should come with the proper mounting bumpers. The bumpers really are not optional. You can soften the ride by purchasing different shocks, but a soft shock will take away from performance handling. Depends on how you drive the car.

 

hi, it looks like these bumpers that engage after about 1.5 inches of shock travel are the factories way of stiffening the ride and body roll. (mine are all original no prev. mods.) Mine is the 04 first year. model. I wish I had looked into softening the ride years ago ! The OEM shocks are well made and mjne were still good just needed some new rubber mounts and perhaps removing half the ure bumpers. This week I plan on removing a rear shock to see if its a similar sit. Bulletin to follow !

 

Here is a picture of the OEM shocks from a 2005 Limited Crossfire. The front shock is complete. The shaft and bumper is covered with a tough plastic sleeve. The rear shock is damaged and I have cut the plastic sleeve off. The bumper is a yellow color and it is encased in metal. The very top shows the OEM mounting hardware.

 

Hi zip thanks for the info ! It looks like the front and back shocks are similarly constructed. I'm going to remove my rears and replace the upper rubber mounts and trim the ure bumper . The rears do have more travel before hitting the bumper (fronts only travel one inch plus before hitting the bumper. I plan to reuse the front bumpers on one of my bucket loaders. I'll try and get a pic loaded of the front shock exposed later today. Thanks
