Or is this just a Crossfire characteristic?
This is why there are warning labels on electric hair dryers (WARNING DO NOT USE IN THE SHOWER WITH THE WATER RUNNING) IDIOTS are a dime a dozen. Someone should post on the audi board so whichever poor slob winds up with your car will know why it runs like sh*t. Likewise you'd be the first one to call an ambulance chaser to SUE AUDI when the damn thing finally does let go. Just in case you haven't done the math, you have saved maybe $1,000.00 in all that time. (25 mpg @ .20 diff per gallon) Out of warranty the new engine will cost approx $5,000.00. GEE THAT MAKES SENSE!!! Just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't!!!

You fail to see what the point would be for M.B. and others to require premium fuel for there engines. That I know of D.C. has no major stake in any oil company so they have nothing to gain financially from suggesting one fuel grade over another.

I looked up the specs and the Audi A6 runs a 12.5:1 compression ratio vs 10.0:1 for the Crossfire so TxLapDog must either be driving it very easy or live in a very cold climate. Either way I have always read that 9.5 - 9.7 is about the upper limit for regular unleaded. Its being penny wise and pound foolish in my book.
