Question Heated Seats

04 Crossfire Coupe
Has anyone worked on their heated seats themselves? When I bought the car with 36k, the butt worked on the drivers but not the back. And the back worked but not the butt on the passengers seat. Now, nothing works on the drivers. I assume its the heating elements inside the seat, but I'm not sure about parts and tearing off the covers myself.
Thanks!
Steven T

Somebody on here has put aftermarket heating elements in their seats - do a search.
Also...
Trouble shoot what's wrong. I had a similar problem with one of my seats - it was either a wiring loom or control unit that needed replacing - neither was that expensive.

You will have to also replace the control unit, the control unit fails and then the elements burn out. If you are still under warranty take it back to the dealer. If you screw up the seat covers they are about $1400.00 per seat to replace.

My two cents: Mine's an '04 with 22k miles and my drivers side went out entirely (sometime between cold seasons), thankfully still under warranty. Sounds like there's a lot of problems with them though. Too bad no recall.

I'm curious.......has anyone had their seats repaired only to have them fail again at a later date.

I'm wondering if this is going to be something that happens again and again?

I have not had this happen, but I'm expecting it. Since I got my bottom heaters repaired, they get very hot. Uncomfortably hot. From what I've read, this excessive heat is prelude to another burn out. So... I'm using them whenever possible to get them to burn out before warrenty expires.

My drivers seat went out right away at about 6k miles. It was replaced, now at 24k miles the back works, but not the bottom area. Passenger seat gets used nearly every day and has no problems.

I changed the seats in my car, went for the Cedar color units ! Love that color combo . . . .however, I did notice that the bottom cushion on the drivers side does not heat up !! Decided to check on my original seats . . . took the ohm-meter out and measured at the connector - sure enough, on the drivers side, the seat back elements are ok, but the seat bottom was open circuit !!! I checked on the pass. side seat, and both were good ! These are the original seats that came with the car, and only have 12k km on the car (that's 7200 miles!!!) . . . not sure of the other seats, but only the drivers side seat bottom is gone. Should be relatively easy fix, but need to see the part first !!!

Seeing how I was up at my friendly dealership for some parts (oil filters for the Crossfire), I asked about a seat heat element repair kit . . . sure enough there is one listed. Have ordered it and will see how tough it will be to install . . . might have to let the dealership weanies replace it . . .but first want to see if I can !

Will post more, with pics once I get it figured out . . .

Cheers

Mark

You will see lots of threads about seat heaters. Probably the weakest part on our cars. I took out the extended warranty just to get these covered. My car is in the shop now for the two bottom heaters.

Just curious if you are much heavier than your passenger.

Yep. Dealer had daughters seat out when I stopped to check if they were going to replace the roadster top. My heaters were repaired last year and set to be fixed this week.

Yes, I have had the seat heaters in the shop 4x for seat heater issues during the last year and a half, they just don't know what they are doing- my car is at the dealership right now as we speak it has been there for 5 days- The first and second time the dealership I took them to fixed the both passenger side and drivers side, only to have the drivers back side go back out within 1 week of the fix date- I have taken them to a new dealership and hope they get it right this time, my warranty is up in April, I have an extended contract but don't think they are covered under the plan I have- I thought about just letting them go because each time I think they are tearing the seats apart, but I hate that they just can't get them to work properly- at least I got a Charger as a rental-

Hey everyone . . . I just picked up the Seat Repair Kit from my dealer. . . . I have attached a few pics, showing the part number and contents. . . . it has the instruction sheets included. When I get some more time I will scan and add these. Will let you know how it works out . . . .

PS - Interesting to read on the instruction sheet bottom corner :

K6855424 TP Instruction Sheet
Date : November 20, 2002

Would seem like this was an issue with the SLK that Merc. or Chry. did
not address when they built the XF !!!

Out of curiosity what did the kit cost and does 1 kit do 2 seats or only one?

The kit is good for ONE seat - does both the bottom cushion and the back . . . . cost was $99.12 (Canadian) . . . this was "my" cost - my buddy is the parts manager at a local dealership. But I think it is probably less in the USA.
