I found this today on the Mercedes oil spec for out vehicles.
It appears that our cars are the 229.5 spec

Vehicles with the Flexible Service System FSS from MY1998-2004 can use 229.5 or 229.3 oils.
With FSS paper filters are fine
It appears that at least on all 2004 models paper filters are fine.

Amsoil also makes a 5w40 that meets the MB spec, and it is a much better oil than Mobil 1. If you search the internet, you can find a few dealers and somone always offers a discount on it.
