Shift lever lockup

Went to take a drive tonight......started the xfire up and went to shift it out of park and it wouldn't move. I looked at the indicator on the dash and instead of showing a "P" for park, there was a solid box. I tried shutting the car off and starting it again but it didn't help. I read the manual and it said that this happens when there has been an electrical problem. When I used the factory tool to manually unlock the shifter, the check engine light came on. Drives fine now but the check engine light is still on. About a week ago i was useing the manual shift feature from 1st to 2nd and the check engine light came on and the car went into limp mode. I stopped and cussed for a few minutes and when i took off, it started shifting fine. The check engine light went off a few days later.
Anybody have any ideas???? It's still under warranty (2005 with 7800 miles) but I am not sure how good the dealer is on working on xfires!!!
