Default What tyres?

I am in need of a new set of boots

What size tyre do you guys use? I am on standard rims and at the moment have 255's on the rear and 225's on the front.

There is a sticky, I believe, in the wheels/brakes/tires/suspension forum which addresses maximum sizes on OEM rims. If not posted as a sticky, use the search function. Very informative.

Generally speaking, the largest tyres you should safely attempt to mount are 235/40R18 up front and 285/35R19 in the rear.

Good luck.

Mo..Worth checking tyre size out with Steve UK..he has upgrade to a wider size..with littke problems and more protection to the rim edges. I intend to do the same when needed.

I used with these guys with great success lots of £££ saved.
Phone Alloy Wheels, Tyres, Exhausts, Suspension, Air Filters, Brakes from RTecShop.com for a best quote. They are at St Albans just off M25. These are the wheel experts and very help full. Prices may have crept up of course.

I recommend for standard wheels Falken FK 452
rear 275x19x35 £149.00 (slightly wider to fill rim)
front 225x18x40 £100.00 (standard size)

They have loads of choices/prices. They supplied my wheels and tyres which are different sizes to standard and were very professional. I will go back again next time.

OK, I think maybe I'm getting confused by the Z in "ZR"? The book of words says:

Sport Performance (Y speed rating) tires and All-Season Performance (W speed rating) tires

Front 225/40 ZR18

Rear 255/35 ZR19

So actually, the speed rating choice is between Y and W? What do most people use?

It depends on whether they will remove tyres as the best guys do - in which case its makes no difference. The cheap refurbishments don't remove tyres so i would check first. If they don't remove, you may as well get the new boots on first.

Hi 11 Feb

If you go for a full refer on your wheels let the guys who are doing the work on your rims fit the new tires , Because a normal tire fitters will more than lighty mark your rims & your be back to square 1 , The biggest tire i have heard of at the rear on a standard rim are 295's but needed spacers .

Cheers

Andy

285 rears would probably be the limit. Its the gap between inner wall and Shock Absorber you have to watch. Also consider, as you go up in width, you also go up in diameter, which is a percentage of width. Thats why I went for 275, which fills the rim width spot on.
Be careful with fronts. Even standard 225's are on 0.5 inch away from top suspension arm. When I fitted 235's my rims are an inch wider than standard and the gap is now 0.25 inches!
I think 235 on standard rims is risky!

Hi Ken uk( me old mate)

Yea it was a sad day the Xfire drove away , But the people who brought it love the car & have already done about 2000 miles in it including a trip around France , His France trip he went with his brother in his black 911 , But he was getting a little p*****d off because every time they parked they would come back to a crowd around the Xfire & no one looked at his 911 .
I now run around in a 60 plate Smart fourtwo (999cc ) & the AMG 55 is Michelle's week day drive & our weekend monster . No i have to say i can not see us picking up another Xfire any time soon if ever . As now with the hard roof folding in to the boot & the V8 sound track coming out the back i think we have move on .Also just to **** you off 28-30 mpg on a run yes thats correct 28+ from a 5.5L V8 & did i say 4.9 zero to 60 or should that be zero zero to 60 lol .

Oh Ken the parking is a nightmire the front is sooo low , you can hit the floor coming off a speed bump .

Feb 11 do a search on rear tires 295 & they should say if they needed a spacer but as Steve said the 275 size is the one & should have been fitted as standard

Cheers & all the best

Andy

P.s. Steve-uk i always knew you liked the Red Xfires , Have you moved all your mods over ??

Hi mate!
Yes you got me sussed, the red ones were always my favourite - I have almost got the car back to standard now, just put the original exhaust back on. Its just mainly wheels, front grills left now and a couple of bits, so nearly there. It's going to a lady in Kent but I will see it once on a while as she wants me to carry on servicing it!

Hi Steve-uk

That was the car your servicing right . Yes to Red as the best colour ( sorry color) ,When i was looking for the SLK there was not one Dark red in the UK so i went for black which does look great , but the black need soooo much cleaning , I still have only seen one dark red 55 amg for sale in about 18 mouths . This is the first black car i have owned i can see why ( that will get a new post Ken ).

Cheers

Andy

P.s. Ken if your in the area pop in im always up for a run

Question Re: What tyres?

What are the advantages of putting the 275 tyers on instead of the 255? Did you put them on the standard factory fitted wheels or did you get new, bigger wheels too? I'm not very clued up on this technical stuff yet
