Default Problems to look for when buying a 2nd hand Xfire

Ok chaps, i'm desperate to buy a Chrysler Crossfire. They are rare cars (esp up here in Scotland), with only a handful for sale around the country.
I am aware that it can be a bit hit and miss when buying one. You might buy a 2nd hand one and find out that it's mechanically sound with no problems..
On the other hand, i'm reading you can end up with a Xfire with a lot of mechanical faults (transmission, engine failing, electrics failing)..

so my question is, if i go to a dealer/private buyer...what key things should i be looking out for...I know it's not possible to check for everything but still....
do you reckon I should find a mechanic/chrysler specialist and take him with me so he can look it over?

THe one i'm looking at is at a Chrysler/Dodge dealership so i'm sure i'm protected to an extent...

I have a Mazda MX-5 at the moment which are probably the most reliable cars on the road, so i'm not used to things failing/breaking down!

Help appreciated...

Not sure about rare - currently 183 on Autotrader. Rust is the thing to look for - wheel arches bottoms of doors. This is a problem on a lot of Mercedes as well so not just Crossfires. Rear tyres are pricey so want to be good or adjusted for, seat heaters break, fan controls play up. Other than that its just normal car stuff - so far this hasn't cost me anymore to run than my Skoda Octavia. I tried a MX5 before I bought the Roadster and whilst it drove well enough it was too noisy for my taste - same went for a RX8 as well.

Ah sorry I was referring to it being a rarity in Scotland moreso.. Ah, ok, just the usual things to look for I guess...

Well, i've seen a black Xfire..auto...42953 mileage at a Dodge/Chrysler dealer for 7795...may have to trade the mx-5 in and take a leap of faith and go for the Xfire!

Thats top dollar!! would expect at least an 07 plate for that money. there are currently 8 within 30 miles of Glasgow on the Auto trader, all around the 6K mark with less miles than 43k.

Shop around, and if you really want one, be prepared to travel to get a good one at the right price.

Good luck

Yeah, it's a 2005...it's only 2 miles down the road, so will go have a look at it this week. I'd ideally want to buy it from a Dodge/Chrysler dealer rather than private sale (unless it was from someone here!) or a backstreet car trader (who I've had problems with in the past). They have 2, the other one is a manual, Blue, 2007 with only 16K miles on it and it's for sale just under 10K.

Will have to be patient I guess until the right one comes along.

going from what you say I guess prices are a bit steeper in Scotland If you're paying top dollar make sure they give you the same for the MX5 and remember the rust - you have 7 years protection in the UK

Well they were going to give me trade value of around 4K for Mx5 (it's a Mark 2 not a Mark 3).
I could sell it privately and add some cash to the mix but yeah looking for a quick trade.
Hopefully i'll join the Crossfire family soon..I must say, reading the forum here has re-assured me a bit more about these wonderful cars

I have a nice Sapphire Silver Blue roadster for sale. 54 plate, 50000 miles. Had the car for three years and know it pretty well and I would happily sell it to a family member!!!! I'm miles away in Hertfordshire but send me a message if you're interested.

Regards, Andy.
