Broken filament in a bulb? If the bulb burns out soon you'll know which one.
If the filament is just sitting in place and making contact there is no problem, when it does not make contact the idiot light comes on.

According to the manual if a brake light goes out while driving the light will come on when the brakes are applied and stay on until the ignition is switched off.
I have only had a headlight go out so I have had no experience with the brake lights.
By sheer coincidence my bulb out light came on today, opened the door to look for the bulb and it went out.
Started the car and it came on and went out again, came on and went out. WTF.
Guess I'll find out soon.
I cannot complain because with day time running lights the lights get used all the time.

Spoke too soon, indicator came back on, so its not the license plate light.
After doing the sticky ignition fix I didn't snap in the High beam connector all the way. Went back in and secured that, but now I have an intermittent instrument cluster illumination lamp. Must have jerked something loose last time I was in there. Still not sure that will fix it the bulb out indicator.

I had the very same problem...for the life of me I could not locate the bulb as every single light on the car worked. When i took my car in for an MOT the guy told me he replaced a 'brake' light bulb because he saw the warning light on. The reason why all the lights were working was that the brake light bulb filement was broken but still making contact with the prongs inside the bulb..but any judder and it would lose contact. I checked all the bulbs but not close enough. If this happens again in future I know what to look for. Just pull the brake light bulbs and check them out very carefully as I am pretty sure that's your problem.
Just something to throw into the mix, If you replace standard bulbs with LED ones, this can cause the buldout light to come on.
also, don't know if interior lights are on the system but might be worth checking the one in the boot.
