No Service History - URGENT replies needed!
PLEASE SEE UPDATE.
Hi Guys,
I wonder if you can help. I was all set to go buy a Silver coupe today which has 41k miles, fsh, 2 owners, tax/mot etc etc for £4k. However, ive just had a call about a Black Roadster 2005, just been service, but the owner before last has lost the service book due to ex wife not giving it back. However, its got 44k miles, tax /mot, new tyres, new brakes and has just been fully professionally polished to get the body back to mint, its £5k, and had 5 owners.
Am I being crazy to even consider a car with no service history? Ive mad a quick couple of calls to Chrysler and Merc, but none see to be able to look on their system to see if its been serviced.
Any help/advice would be much appreciated.
The reason for the urgency, is that im going to see the silver one at 3pm today.
Many Thanks
Tommyj

your call really, nothing in the mileage! wouldn't bother me about no history. I would just decide if I want a silver one or a black one, coupe or a ragtop! HPi them and take your pick
If you no nothing about cars, maybe take someone who does along with you to have a look.
good luck

UPDATE: Been to see the silver coupe today. It was lovely except for the dreaded rust on the rear, just inside the boot and a few dull patches on the paintwork. The rest of the car was great. Interior was perfect with no marks and everything worked as it should. Has any of you guys been recently through the same experience and what sort of costs were involved in rectifying the rust??
I had another call from the owner of the black soft top. He (today) had a full major service on it and a month or so ago had the gearbox serviced. He has all paperwork to prove the work along with receipts etc of the polish etc etc. Like I mentioned previously, the lack of other service history is holding me back.
Thanks for looking and any help will be much appricated.

As for the service history, my car apparently has Full Service History but I have no book or invoices to prove it. The car has only had one private owner purchased just 15 days after is was registered at the very end of 2006. The dealer I bought it from (who has been fantastic) told me the previous told him it had full service history but they misplaced the book pack in a recent house move. It doesn't bother me and lets be honest I could get you a Fully Stamped Service book, but it doesn't prove anything. Go with your instincts
^^^ this go with instinct... also you can always phone details through to the Chrysler dealer to check if it has had service done
but!!! could be 5 very careful owners Vs 2 utter ******** owners!!
Hi Mo I wasn't sure if this was directed to me or the OP. But incase it's me
I've done exactly that on several occasions albeit via text and the previous owner is getting me a new book stamped up by the dealer that looked after the car. The only problem being the dealer has had a change of PC and so don't go all the way back to when he was first looking after it.
I bought a Vectra 4 years ago as a fairly low mileage (9K) 9 month old 1 owner car as a day to day run around. I gave me no problems at all. I was surprised when I found out that the 1 owner was a car hire company - so you never know what you will get, sold it at 60K miles 2 years later
Bought Chevey ex demo 5K miles to replace it - still got it 54K miles some minor issues (heater fan packed up during hot weather took Bosch a week to get a replacement and strangely a new steering wheel (finish peeled off) new gear **** - developed sharp edge but that's it) luck of the draw I guess.

you must play the lotto ....lol you just never know...but 5 owners is a lot...
also bear in mind that in the UK a 3.2 is a BIG engine and so people will tend to swap it more regularly than a 1.3 Fiesta or somesuch
