Default clunking in rear end

well, i guess i have to go back to the dealer...(sigh). when i go over bumpy roads and RR tracks i hear a "clunking" in the rear end. sounds like a loose shock or something or maybe something hitting the exhaust. any suggestions? doesn't sound like its coming from any particular side either.

thanks,
benji

Check your rear hatch. I'll be that the rubber bumpers are mis-adjusted. Search the forum for rear end rattle and you should get a quite a few hits. FYI, Chrysler has a TSB out on the problem.

There have been a few posts about this.
I've read about the trunk latch, loose shocks, loose mounts, missing parts from the suspension...

Try a search.

I had the same problem. The dealership said there was a TSP about it. They replaced a part in the rear latch, it was covered by Chrysler. It apparently doesn't happen to all XF's but it happens enough that Chrysler has a fix for it.

Had the same issue, noticed that it only occurred at speed. That's when the rear spoiler deploys - hmmm...

Sure enough, the extra downforce created by the spoiler on the rear hatch made it clunk, rattle, etc. Like a stray golf ball back there. At a stop, when I pressed down hard on the rear hatch just below the spoiler, I was able to duplicate the noise.

Took a Torx T-35 wrench and loosened the rubber feet/stoppers on each side, pulled them down about 1/8", tightened them, and presto - noise gone.

Nyazai -- I am not familiar with the rear spoiler clunking you describe. The clunking sound I was talking about and which I thought the first posting was about, occurred at any speed, particularly low speeds when driving over a bump of any type. The TSB provided for a redesigned replacement part to be installed at the rear latch. Apparently, not all XFs were affected.

I have the same clunking noise in my rear...it sounds to be coming from the rear driver side tire area. Any ideas?
