Default Bigger tire size

Need to get new rear tires for my car but not sure if I want to stick with the 255/35/19. Has anyone gone with a wider size or does anyone have thoughts about this. I was told that i could go all the way up to a 285/35/19. And yes I know I need to keep the front and back within an inch. Thanks.

i have 275/40/18 ... diameter 26.7 ... your proposed 285/35/19 is 26.9 ... should fit the wheel well with no rubbing ... and the 30mm extra width is easily distributed on the width of the xF rear wheels so that should not be an issue other than making the mounting process a tad harder.

edit... make sure to reply back with how well they fit a few pictures if possible.

I bought a pair of used 285/35/19 Good Year F1's and put them on the rear of my '04 coupe for a while to use up the tread that was left on the front tires. But the car is leased so when I bought a new set I went back to OEM size. The 285's were pushing the limits on the width of the rims though. They looked really good on the car, they filled out the wheel well and the car looked better from the back too.

When you say pushing the limits of the rim do you mean that in a bad way. This is my daily driver so i want to keep it trouble free. You also said it looked good but how did it drive? Would a 285/40/19 fit or a 275/40/19, if it would what would be the best 40 or 35? If i do end up going with the bigger size tire in the back do i have to change the front tires to a wider size to?

By pushing the limit, I mean your tread of the tire should not be any wider than the outside width of the rim, it would cause your tires to wear in the center. The 285's were just a hair wider than the outside edge of the rim. As for how it drove, I really liked the F1's and I thought it handled great. The Good Year F1's in my opinion are probably the best tires on the market, but they are very expensive. But if I was going to go bigger, I'd go with 275/35's. Here's a real cool site to get tire measurements from ---
