Noise after setting the emergency brake.
After setting the emergency brake, sometimes there is a very loud metal to metal rubbing sound when I take my foot off of the regular brake. It is loud enough that people will turn and look. It happens about 10% of the time and is more common when parking on an up hill slope. Any ideas? The car is a new 2006 (?) with about 1,500 miles. It is a 6 speed stick convertible.

The noise occurs after the motor has already been turned off and the emergency brake has already been pulled as far back as it will go. After both of these things (engine off and emergency brake on), I take my foot of the regular brake and the noise occurs. It never occurs when I use my brakes while driving. The dealer claims it is normal and due to the fact that the emergency brake is cable operated. Anyone else have this problem?
I have that too. The linkage of the E-brake needs to be lubed. My dealer did it for me.

are you on an incline or a hill when it happens ? it is nothing more than the weight of the car moving itself slightly. since the ebrake handle is up, the rear pads are touching the rotor, the car moves slightly and the sound you hear is the rotor turning with the pad gripping it. happens to me all the time.
Yeah, I get the metallic sounds too, it comes from the back of the car, maybe the disc brakes dragging or the emergent shoes rattling around on the disc hat.
This noise is probably 'normal' from the rotors 'dragging' just a bit prior to the e-brake working.
Not sure if yours is louder than mine or not, or if it is just a bit of over-exaggeration, but mine does the same thing.
Set the e-brake, and then let your foot off of the brake pedal, and you'll hear the brake set. Not sure there is much you can do about it. It is probably a bit more excessive in these cars due to the lack of a rear seat and a trunk allowing a short distance and lack of sound-deadening between you and the rear axle.
