New tire question - replace one or both?
Well I picked up a nail in one of my rear tires that is too close to the sidewall to patch. The tires have 5,800 miles on them. Can I get by replacing one, or should I replace both tires? Either way I will be getting the same tires that are already on the car (Stock Contis)

I replaced one rear tire a month ago for a nail.......it was exactly 3 weeks after I had 4 new Goodyear F1 A/S's installed though.

Go ahead and have it plugged or patched and checked for leaks...then replace it with a new tire. Keep it as an unmounted spare in case you have to wait days or weeks for a replacement tire in the future. We bought the insurance on our tires at discount tire and have already replaced one back tire for $50 due to a nail. I never buy insurance or maintenance agreements on small stuff but these tires are too easily ruined and so expensive to replace. We've had three nails and two ruined tires in just 10,000 miles.

No, I wouldn't track my car on a plugged tire. Haven't had one on a dyno...I suppose I'd have to think about that.
For normal street use, plugging a tire (properly) is no big deal. I've had multiple successes and zero failures.
