Question Got a thump after lowering

Ok, so, I finally got the car out to test drive it a bit after my recent spring and shock install. It rides great, but in the rear, there is a muffled "clop, clop" sound when going over bumps at speed. I'm thinking it is coming from the shocks, but I can't figure it out. I torqued everything correctly (yep, even waited to do the bottoms until the suspension was loaded). All the bushings and bump stops are where they need to be. I cut the stock bump stops about and inch before installing them onto the new shocks.

Suggestions are appreciated!

EDIT: It's the rear.

Crawl under it and look for shiny spots, I believe you are hitting a body part with the suspension. Should be obvious, BTW how far did you drop the height. Woody

Sorry, it's the rear. It's not a huge noise; it is annoying though.

Out of curiosity.....how many miles on the suspension before the drop.

Everything mechanical that is under a wear condition is going to have a certain area that's worn. If you have changed the range of wear then you may get certain new sounds. A suspension is like a lever to shocks....change the rate of leverage and the shocks may be working in a different position. The same can be said of the bumpstops, springs, springmounts, urethane bumpers, etc.

Sorry...just not enough information to make a good educated guess. This is entireley based on the SWAG method.

16k miles. I really think it's the shocks. It isn't a metallic sound, it's a soft clop, clop sound. Something sounds loose, I don't know, maybe the dust covers on the shocks are hitting something.

You might want to take the rear wheels off and take a look.
If I had to guess, I'd say that you are getting some rub. Mine did the same when I put the Eibachs on. Took them off the same day.

Whats funny is that when I go over a large bump like a speed bump, no noise. It happens on small bumps at speed, like a rattle almost.

THIS SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME.... I took everything off lowered it and damn wouldn't you know they same noise you are hearing. I took it to Chrysler they just tightened everything up, no more noise weirdest thing. I would suggest getting under there and throwing an air gun on the two bolts or torx it to the right foot lbs. Haha of coarse assuming you didnt try that allready.

wouldn't be the exhaust banging around, you changed the position in which it is hanging when you lowered the car...just a thought...

i have the EXACT same thing in the rear! i just put on H&R springs with Koni adjustables. it looks GORGEOUS and clean, but it's a bit noisy in the rear. everything is tightened, and it does scrub on some hard cornering, but not often.

i really think it's just what it sounds like when you lower the car and have low-profile tires.... everything just gets louder.

I thought that too. Maybe Konis sound that way, but the fronts are quiet. I'm going to go and re-torque everything. Maybe I didn't preload the springs and shocks enough when I torqued it the first time. It sounds like the shocks could be loose. I definitely think it's the shocks.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions! This forum kicks ****!! I'll keep you informed if I find the culprit.

my crossfire had a slight rattle/clunk noise in the right rear once the konis were installed...

the new owner who purchased my prior koni shocks is experiencing the same noise... i installed and tightened all bolts by hand.

and by the way - your car looks outstanding with the new set-up and wheels !!! very nice end result !!!

i wonder if it's our hatch rattling? i fixed myself, but maybe with the stiffer setup in the rear, now it's rattling again....

I thought that too, but that was the first thing I did... I got out the electrical tape and re-taped the hatch linkage!

Ok, I put it back on the lift and re-torqued everything. Still clop clopping over every little imperfection on the road. It is extremely annoying!! It's not the hatch, it is definitely on both sides of the car and sounds to be coming from the shock locations. Please assist!

I don't really know a lot on this subject but once I saw recommended for KW coilovers to leave things loose, drive slowly around the parking lot, and then tighten things down. I can't remember the specifics but apparently on the 300's a lot of people had problems getting them correctly tightened so they were quiet. Just an idea, loosen things up drive some and then tighten them down with the weight of the car holding them in place.

Still no rub on the inside of the wheelwells?
When I put the Eibachs on mine, it did just as you described. I could see faint rub marks in the wheelwells when I pulled the wheels/tires.
Went back to stock the same day.

Yes, I have faint rub marks on the inside wheel wells, but very faint. That doesn't concern me too much and isn't the noise I'm hearing. I should be able to correct the rubbing with 10mm spacers if it gets worse. The thumping happens on very quick and small road imperfections. It sounds like when the hatch rattles, but it isn't the hatch. It comes from the shock locations. Maybe I'll loosen things up and then tighten after a drive. I don't know.
