Found your post while looking to see if anyone else heard what my mechanic said. "These cars need to have their brake lines flushed from time-to-time or else they get clogged up and then the fix becomes really expensive.

Any info?

I used to work with a guy that rebuilt old Volkswagons and specialized in brake systems. He swore by flushing the lines every 30K with water-based fluid and 50K with silicone (this was in the '80's). It couldn't hurt, and will remove any water that the fluid absorbed from the atmosphere in the reservoir.

I'm doing mine this summer.
