Default Snow Tires

New to the forum. Just bought a 2004 Coupe and we love it!

We're in Utah and it snows...heavily at times.

My Grand Cherokee laughs at the snow and ice, but our Crossfire, with summer tires, won't come out of the barn in bad weather.

How can we put snow tires on the rear without spending $1,000 for two 19" Blizzaks? I read somewhere where some onwers were buying cheap 18" wheels and the 18" Blizzaks for about $400, rather than the $899 out the door for two of them in 19" at the Les Schwab tire store.

Anyone have some advice on which 18" wheel I should be shopping for?

Thanks!

I bought a set of four 18" Blizzaks on wheels, everything complete, for just under $1500.00 delivered. You should consider all four wheels with these cars, as you need traction, and the ability to steer. Pics of my tires & wheels are in my gallery if you want to see.

No, No, Alan, you're going up the budget tree, not down!

That's a good price and a good suggestion, thanks.

Yeah the whole shooting match was off the budget tree for me too You could just do the two rears with wheels, I guess, but mine is my daily driver. I really didn't have a choice. It was pointed out to me by a friend and Nissan 350 driver that the first time I took an excursion offroad in the Crossfire, I would so wish I had bought the tires!

The Tire Rack's 18" Blizzak selection for the Crossfire did not effect the speedo either. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Or you can try a set of Dunlop Winter Sports. By far less expensive though they don't have quite the "bite" as the Blizzaks in deep snow.

I suppose it all depends on just how often and in what snow conditions you plan on driving in.

Don't forget to throw some weight in the back, either. A couple of hundred pounds of sand (or whatever works) really helps!

Thanks, KURTS! I have to pay attention to anyone with a King Crimson avatar! I will check out the Dunlops today.

I have weight in the trunk; learned from years of driving an Alpha Romeo Spider covertible in the snow. That car had little, skinny all weather tires and with some dead weight in the trunk and a half tank of gas would go through knee-deep snow like a rabbit! It was unbelievable.

(Dont ask me why I was driving an Alpha Romeo in knee-deep snow...had to do with martinis, I think...I can't remember).

I have the exact same tires on the rear... They have worked great so far...then again no snow in Jersey yet (*knock on wood*) I'm ok with keeping it that way.

+1
Purchased the 18" Blizzaks (LM25 Run Flats) from tirerack.com and mounted them on 18" rims on all four. The summer wheel set went into storage. I'll know better when the snow flies how they turn out, however I'm optimistic that the Blizzaks won't let me down. The rims I picked up for cheap and the tires were delivered to my door (Canada) for just over $1,000.

BTW, as previously mentioned, snows should be put on all four....

That's an outrageous price! And they fit properly on your 19" rear wheels?
