Default ebrake too high

I saw a turtle on a back road and turned around to move it out of the road. Pulled the ebrake 3/4 of the way up which on any other car would be plenty. Let the turtle in the woods 20 feet off looked upbecause I heard a beautiful growl (mustang 427r) and saw my car slowly rolling forward. Luckily I got to my car in time to hit the brake pedal before it went off the road or into oncoming traffic. Is this normal? Any way to adjust it or do I just have to yank it all the way up everytime I make a quick stop and leave it in neutral? Also I have ebc redstuff pads in front and yellowstuff in back but noticed this happen a little with OEM as well.

That seems to be too much. Either adjustment or replacement may be called for.

Adjustment. ( never heard of wearing out the ebrake shoes )
The pads have nothing to do with the emergency brake on these, they are shoe pads in the drum on the rear wheels, not the pads on the rotors.

I was thinking of a previous owner perhaps driving with them slightly engaged. I know how they work, but they can be worn.

+1 ^
The cable can get stretched as well.
I have had a lining come detached from the shoe, but this jammed the wheel and I could only go backwards. Not on the Crossfire though.

These are awkward to adjust as you have to do it through the threaded hole for the wheel bolt.
Further investigation is required here.

Well, I did.

Once. When I was young.

Adjustment is made at the "splitter", where the e-brake cable splits to each side of the rear hubs just above the drive shaft and ahead of the diff. There is a bolt that can be tightened to engage the e-brake sooner. However, when I replaced my rear hub, I had to adjust this bolt several times. Too loose, and no e-brake. Too tight and the mechanism makes a clicking sound at the hub where the cable pivot point would hit on the lug bolts (see pics).

I've tried using the e-brake autocrossing, and it really doesn't do much to slow the car down. It is only designed to hold the parked car in place. Good Luck.
Mike

The maintenance manual has the correct method for the adjustment. The adjustment at the splitter is just used to take the slack out of the cable after the correct method is used.

ps the maintenance manual is posted some place on this site.
