Tire has been rubbing on screw under wheel well (picture)
Tire has been rubbing on screw under wheel well (picture)
My Crossfire sounded like a tire was going to go flying off today and when I looked on the inside of my front tires, they were absolutely stripped and worn down. This has happened before but this time, I realized that a screw/nut was right there (holding something together on the top of the wheel well).
I'll get the car towed tomorrow and 2 new tires, but what's going to prevent this from happening again? Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks!

Are you running stock tires and wheels? What you are contacting is the upper ball joint mounting nut, and you shouldn't be able to reach it with stock tire sizes. It is close-about 3/8" normally.

If you do not learn from the first lesson you just aren't catching on to quickly enough.
Anyway those tires have past their 'use by' date a good long time ago.

The tire to ball joint clearance does not change, ,,,when you mount the new tire,, if it does not rub then it will never rub. you see #5 in the pic below the axle at the bottom where the center of the tire mounts and the nut and bolt at the top they are one , maybe if one wheel bearing is completely worn out then and only one tire would wear(May if you have over size tires on the car it could rub,,but i don't think so. , now if you are out of alignment ,,way out,, you could get king of tire wear jim

Just a thought and I'm sure you would notice but if the 19's were mounted on the front!!!!! My bet is not the stock size tire, it doesn't take a lot, as mentioned earlier, there's not a lot of clearance even with the OEM tires.

That tire is plain and simple falling apart and should have been replaced a long time ago. It is a danger to everybody.
We will not hear from XfireAsh until they want more advice, maybe never.

I just looked, and felt, where the stud and nut is located, it's in just the right position to star milling into an incorrectly sized tire (too tall/wide) or a wheel and tire combo that has the wrong offset. I say start milling, driving on it (a tire with the shoulder milled away) will finish the process.
He said "This has happened before" which doesn't sound promising. He could have maybe 7 degrees of toe-out or 5 degrees of negative camber (somehow) which both could cause wear and stress on the inside shoulder of the front tires and start the process of tire destruction.
