Front / rear coil spring specs and info.
I am looking to change out my coil springs all the way around. There several aftermarket lowering options, but I want the stock height.
I was pulling the front tires off last weekend and checking the brakes, and had a o crap moment, both of my front coil springs are broke
I have a set of airlift 1000 in the rear coils, giving me some more strength.
Debating on changing out with srt coils, which have around 100 lbs per inch additional rating (will post the specs I found later) and putting my bags back in the springs, might only keep 5 lbs in them.
Leaving the rear and just getting a pair of used fronts, but with more and more broken coil threads, I don't want to have to wonder if it will happen again.
Not looking for lowering since it is my dd, stock height is fine.
or if I go air, then there is height options, 4" convulated bags or 3.5" sleeve bags.
Thinking about coil overs also.
Anyone changed their coils out to other than oem springs?
and not lowered?
Need to get full specs and look at more options, and see what vendors have what springs rates available.
cutting and grinding down coils is easy, the hard part is finding the right lbs per inch.
But you know me, when I change something out, I have to be different lol .

"The SRT-6 shares an awful lot in common with the outgoing SLK32 AMG, other than just the engine and gearbox. The dual control arm front and multilink rear suspension are virtually identical, although they are tuned in this application, with firmer damping and much stiffer spring rates. (They have gone up from 303 pounds per inch front and 337 pounds per inch rear to 451 lb/in and 480 lb/in respectively on the coupe.) The brakes, too, have come in for attention, with vented discs all around (the stock car has solid rear rotors), bigger front discs, and dual piston calipers in place of single-piston items."
From automobilemag
coupe's & roadsters have slightly different spring rates also
"The Coupe’s spring rates are 451 lb./in. in the front and 480 lb./in. in the rear, while the Roadster’s are 434 lb./in. in the front and 491 lb./in. in the rear, compared to 303 lb./in. front and 337 lb./in. rear on the original Crossfire Coupe and Roadster models."
From topspeed
So N/A coupe and roadster has same springs, but on the srt they are different spring rates.
given that the roadster is heavier in the rear than a coupe with a empty hatch

I need the spring bucket dimensions so I can see what options of springs I can find.
Then figure out what height i want, then can calculate, the measurement of the springs in the cup, fornthe height, then calculate the lbs per inch added to get the height to cut springs.
Or is I go with air.

Air bags are a progressive spring rate, the more they compress the more air pressure in them, and the higher spring rate, if you have tanks added to the bags it keeps the pressure more evenly throughout the mag and softer ride, but need lots of wheel travel.
and would add adjustable bumpstops, so if aired down to much and hit a big bump, tires will not rub, or if a emergency and a problem, can still get home.
The sleeve bag would need additional work due to the angle on lower control arms, I don't know how much angle they can work, maybe amake a wedged spacer.
The double convulated bag looks perfect for the rear

Anyone still around that has done air springs ?
I searched forum for sir springs but did not come up with much.
Would definitely be a convulated over rolling for the stiffer spring rate

Took my front tires in today to my shop to get them unmounted and rotated talked with the shop manager, which I have done several times, and we where trying to figure out options.
I took some measurements last weekend on the front.
how my front sits atm which would be lowered I have 7 5/8" and with the tire off and hanging a distance of 8 1/2" with tire on is 3 1/2" clearance on top of the tire to fender, as sits now I can't fit my fingers between tire and fender.
I am having a brain fart on thinking of the name of the part inside the coil spring bucket that sits inside of the spring (will call it a horn atm lol) but anyway the horn is 1" on top and bottom, so coil springs would add 2" if I attatchbthe mounting plates and sit on the horn then I would probably ne between 7 3/4" to 8" depending on where I want to make it sit.
4 1/2" outside spring diameter so a 5" air spring would work good, this bag with extended of 7.5" would leave plenty of room for mounting plates and have a stiff spring rate.
there is a 6" diameter at same place.

Spring pocket was what I was thinking of, perch I always just think on on a coil over or strut, but ya a perch also
Anybody here had lots of experience with air springs?
never done full air all around for long periods, mainly helpers and singing on leaf springs for load capacity.

Hi Speedy4X4
I dont know if this helps, but years ago I used air shocks on my 65 Impala super sport and used air bags on my 69 Chevelle super sport. I had a fill valve in the trunk to load them or balance them. They were a lot of fun and lasted a long time! Going over railroad tracks too fast was a trip! ha! good times!
Drive safe,
Joe

Just to bump an old topic ( and to hopefully get a reply
) : can anyone tell me if a lowering kit of 30mm will make the front tires rub? The previous owner of my XF apparently put some sort of lowering kit on it, but the front tires rub badly on full lock. If I install
kit, does anyone know if they would still rub? Basically, does anyone have a XF lowered by 30mm, and can that person tell me if their front tires rub?
