I love my 04 coupe. I has General brand name performance tires. The tires are almost new. They are terrible loud on the road. The tread design looks like farm tractor tires. If I replace them with a conventional looking tire tread, should I expect a substantial reduction in road noise? I do no driving that requires performance tires.

 

I've had Nitto Invo's on since 2009 - very quiet, very grippy. And the tread pattern looks cool, too.

 

Hopefully not the same tires from 2009.
There are several threads on this subject. One just started within the last month with many recommendations.
Remember you get what you pay for. If money is tight base decision on price. You will get a safe tire. Many cheaper tires recommended won't get you a quite or nice ride.
I have ridden in cars with some of the recommended tires and would not buy them, but 25-30 years ago I would have. Everybody has different expectations for tires.

Nope - 3 sets over that 14 yr time frame. I like them that much.
