Default What happened with the oil filters??

I've been changing the oil in my car since I bought it. The oil filter started out being the one with the string wrapped around it. The part number ended in 26 and then they switched to part number 31 that had the 2 big white bands wrapped around it (supposed to be redesigned and better). The filters were always $19.50 plus tax from Chrysler. I went to the dealer yesterday to pick one up and the clueless parts guy (nearly everyone at the dealership I go to is)... handed me the filter and it was the old style with the string and the price was now $31.00 plus tax. I questioned him and he said he knew nothing about it and that was the newest filter. So I left kinda angry and went to the Mercedes dealership where at least they treat the customers professionally. They too only had the filter with the string on it and the price was $24. So it seems that I will be buying from them now. Anyone know the deal behind this? I must say though, based on my local dealership, it is no question why the income statement of Chrysler is looking subpar.

They have superseeded, been on restriction, re-designed, you name it. It all is due to people not seating the filter all the way on the "stick." When it's not seated right, there is a possibility of it coming apart, and destroying the engine. Apparently it happened a couple years ago, and even the dealers couldn't get the oil filter. This is why now when you do an oil change it comes with a drawing of how to seat the oil filter.

I've noticed the paper filter feels very crispy almost to the point of disintegrating after 5k miles, stick with the fleece filter.

Maxwell, which one is the fleece? I believe it is the one with the 2 bands on it? They both look and feel like the same material to me...

I had a similar experience the other day. I called the Chrysler Dealer and they wanted $31 for one(F THAT), so I called the Benz dealer and they had it for $14. It is the fleece type with the skinny string around it. It did come with all 5-6 o-rings and a copper washer which I assume is for the drain plug. It came with the afore mentioned instructions aswell. Who would have thought that the Benz dealer would be 1/2 price...

Default WIX 57078 (SRT-6) Temporarily paper instead of glass fleece

Something funny recently happened with WIX as well.

The WIX 57078, SRT-6 filter, is supposed to be a MANN glass fleece filter.

I bought a couple and instead they were a dark paper filter, BUT they were marked with the WIX57078 part number.

I contacted where I bought them and they investigated. A few days later I got an email back from them and they told me that there was a mistake made by WIX where there are some paper core filters out there marked with the part number for the glass fleece filter. They assured me that it is being straightened out and that they will ship me some correct ones once they sort out the mess.

I should post some pics of each to show the mis-marked paper filters to contrast with the typically excellent MANN filter that comes as WIX 57078.

I bought a couple of the Wix 57078s from Rockauto.com a few months back. One was incorrect as mentioned above. RockAuto exchanged it - no problem.

So what is the problem mentioned in this thread about not seating the filter properly. The filter should be seated properly if it "clunks" into place on the rod no? I had to use pretty good force to get that filter to go into place. I could see how some may not seat it properly by not pushing hard enough. With enough force, it clicked into place. No instructions came with my filter that was in the Mercedes part box. It was the one with the two white plastic bands around it. Got it from Mercedes.

So which is the correct one ? One with brown end caps or one with black end caps?

That's kinda weird because I bought some oil filters off ebay and wanted to make sure they were the latest. I was told by 5 different Mercedes dealers that A 000 180 31 09 was replaced by A 000 180 26 09. I have purchased the 31 in the past but only have seen the 26 09 now.

Lightbulb Re: What happened with the oil filters??

FYI...

I went to my Chrysler dealer today...and this is what I was told and showed about the Crossfire Oil Filter.

New oil filter to be used is Chrysler Part # 5102905AB which on the box is a Mercedes 000-180-26-09 Fleece filter...and the price was $45.00!! from the chrysler dealer. Dealer parts mgr said that is the new filter that is specified to be used now.

This filter ( MB# 000-180-26-09 ) replaces the Mercedes part number 000-180-31-09

I also called 4 local Mercedes Dealers parts departments and they also confirmed that the newest filter to be used and supplied is the 000-180-26-09 FLEECE fILTER....There prices ranged from $22.00 - $24.50 ( dealer dependent )

Therefore..., the website previously posted with a $14.00 price is a great Bargain and is the correct part number.

Anyone familiar with the K&N HP-7004 filter? In photos, it looks like the fleece WIX 57078.

Just some updated information...

All the Mercedes dealers that I have contacted now use the 000-180-26-09 Fleece filter.

Also, they (MB Dealers ) have now switched to Mobil 1 5W40 oil instead of the 0W40 oil. This oil in now used in almost all mercedes engines. Also, the MB dealer sells it in Quarts for $5.50/qt. That was cheaper than Walmart who was selling it for $5.97/qt. The dealer said they have switch to the 5W40 due to less oil consumption...and a little better lubrecation.
