Default Repair Top Now or Wait for Total Failure

My 2005 roadster rear glass has started to separate at the lower left corner. I do not think I have any hope of the dealer replacing the top (my car was delivered to a Virginia dealer). Should I repair the top now where the separation has started or wait until the glass completely fails and then fix it? With partial separation the glass is still positioned correctly in the space. If it fails completely I think properly positioning the glass will be significantly more difficult. I plan on using 3m Window Weld for the repair.

Do the repair. Be careful as the WW can be messy.
My repair held for more than a year before my top was replaced under warranty.

Did you use the primer on yours? Since it's "suggested" for glass I've got it in my Amazon cart with the Window Weld. Basically waiting till some little warmer weather is in the forecast.

Or tell me it's only an hour job to swap complete tops.. wife's car falls under "warranty" rules.. LOL

I don't have any problems with my 05 (yet) but how can you tell if warranty will cover if it messes up? Thanks

You have 10 years or 100K miles warranty. "Rumored" from date of original sale. And there are 9 southern states that it is valid in - Basically Texas and east. Cars ORIGINAL sale point must be from one of the 9. Facebook rumors claim warranty honored outside of this. Funny though I requested the VIN of one of these cars to run carfax on and never heard another word. You can live in Michigan .. and if the car was originally Florida sale.. your good to go. Go figure.. LOL.

And another oddity .. they seem to run from totally free up to $500 "co pay".. makes no sense at all.

Someone suggested the primer after I did the repair. I didn't use it and my repair worked fine.

maxcichon and I did my top, took about 4 hours.
Now that we've done one, we expect about 2 hours to do his when it comes in.

What about frame and all since you have already been in there? Don't know I'd play them for a top.. but almost feels like a getting even for everyone else.. LOL

I did take the time to inspect the frame and lube all the joints. Also checked for any leaks on the bow cylinders.

HINT: when you are drilling out all those pop rivets, have someone with a shop-vac sucking up all the metal crap as you drill.
Also, when you remove the weatherstripping pieces, the channel gets expanded in the frame, use some parallel pliers to crimp the channels back down some or the weatherstripping won't stay in place when you put it back in. ( that alone is why we wasted so much time - figuring out why the weatherstripping wouldn't stay in place. )

Do you know if Ky would fall into one of the states? How do you go about getting it done?
Thanks for the info

Good explanation. Maybe we'll do a photo guide when we do mine and post it here?

From facebook:

I guess I had a bit of good fortune today. Called Chrysler and gave them the TSB and my VIN, and I'm eligible for the top replacement on my 2005 SRT6. She goes in 12/9 for 2 days. Warranty is up 11/30/2014 so get calling if you already haven't! TSB 23-035-11A 1-800-992-1997

The effected states are Alabama, Louisiana, South Carolina, Florida, Missouri, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and Texas. But some have said they were replaced anyway.

Wanda Morales How do you know about the technical service bulletin I was at Chrysler today and spoke with a service manager concerning my crossfire and he never mentioned that.

Thanks to everyone for the information I have my new top installed now. But I have wind noise at the door glass top corner on both sides. I called the dealership and they said got a email that said it would take time for the top to seal to the door glass. Anyone have this problem and know a fix for it? You can actually see daylight thru the crack. Thanks again!

Since yours is the first I've read on this.. I'd call bullshit and tell them "here's how you adjust the window"... print this and take with you..

Ok thanks for the link, don't have a way to print it out but will do something. When I took it in for the new top there was pretty much zero wind noise, was told to drive it and let it settle in to seal. would they have had to mess with the windows putting the top on in order for them to come out of adjustment?Trying to figure out what happened.

And let me add when I when back into the shop area to check progress on car they was using a rubber mallet to hammer the window seal onto the top frame.

Are these/this the curved fabric-covered bits at the rear/top of the window?

They have to remove and re-shape the hidden metal clips that keep its shape. When they are "ripped" out for removal-the metal gets streched out and WILL NOT go back properly.

Ask me how I know?
