tire decision
tire decision
i've narrowed my search down but one thing will help me choose.
one tire, the better of the two, i can only find online. so there goes local support and warrenty.
the other, although recieves great reviews just isn't in the same catagory. it on the other hand is popular and availible locally.
both will cost about the same price after shipping, tax, mounting, ect.
whats your opinion on this?

The link didn't work but, the website is ordertire.com
What does UTQG means? I need new tires too. I just want a good tire for a good price.

The Uniform Tire Quality Grading is a labeling system required by the federal government. All tires sold in the United States must be graded and labeled with information on treadwear, temperature (resistance to heat buildup) and traction. These ratings are intended to help consumers more easily compare tires. Tires sold in the United States must be examined through a series of tests defined by the government and conducted by the manufacturer. Manufacturers are then responsible for assigning ratings to their products.

Is this much different than the Z or ZR rating?
Don't want to sound dumb asking these questions but, most tire shops have no idea either.
Re: tire decision
Those numbers for UTQG are compared to a generic tire having a value of 100. So a tire with a treadwear rating of 420 will last 4.2 times that of a generic or the 3500 treadwear rating would be 3.5 times that of a generic tire.
The lettering refers to safe operating speed. ZR rated tires can go as high as "149mph+"

Re: tire decision
something else to consider, at least the way i'm looking at it.
fact, the harder the rubber the longer it would last in use(tire). i know this isn't directly related or a rule, just a guide i'm using. the higher the number the harder the rubber. with this thinking, if looking at a 380 tire and a 180 tire, or quality brands! , the 180 will be of softer compound and should have better traction. this isn't going into looking at tread design and wet handleing, but its just how im looking at thing while choosing.
with that said, for my daily driver, i'm searching for tires with a rating of 280-350 or so. i need something that'll last all my miles i put on the car daily, but i also am a spirited driver, so i don't want something like my cousins T/A is using that spin and slid all over the place with a rating of 420.
somebody will chime in if i'm wrong, and i'll learn. but this is my uneducated way to semi judge what i'm looking at.

Makes speedo read a tad high but ok with me. Tires quiet but have had little chance to run them out. Rated 380 AA A, and were #1 rated tire at TireRack for several years out of 44 comparable tires. If you buy from AAFES, you save $$ but just make sure they know how to mount your TPMS.
