new rims...lug nuts...problem...help!
ok. got my new rims. nice. sweet.
put them on. nice. sweet. sexy.
decided to go for drive. started to reverse out. slight crackng sound. only slight. from the rears. went forward. turned into a dull cracking. and not random. like i am hitting something. anyway. reverse a couple of metres. same things. pull back into garage.
take wheel off.
puzzled.
look at the amount of thread coming out of the back of the stock rim with the stock wheel nut around 16-17.
look at the amount of thread coming out the back of the new wheel with new wheel nut. 22-23 mm.
is this the problem? shorter nuts required? is something going on inside that hub?
thanks.
vteer.

Depending on the thickness of the wheel flange mating surface, you might be forced to use shorter bolts.
This is actually fairly common. If you're not opposed to altering the bolts you already have, you can grind them down. Just be sure to find a nut with the same thread, run it all the way down the bolt, and then grind down the bolt. When you are done grinding the bolt, you can simply run the nut back off of it and it will help to "clean up" the threads at the end you just ground off.

Please read this thread. It addresses this issue:

You already might have problems (permanent) with your parking brake.
Is the inside diameter of your new wheels 66.56 mm? If they are larger, say 73.1 mm, they sent along these "hub-centric rings" to make up the difference.
You slide one over the spindle of your car and the new rim fits nice and snug over the ring. Keeps it centered!

Sure it can be repaired! I meant "permanent" in the viceral sense. If you read the whole thread, the parts that get damaged are listed. I think the real danger is from wiping off the threads on the end of the lugs and damaging the female threads in the spindle when you remove the lugs. Ouch!
Best of luck,

all fixed.
got the new wheel lugs. put them in. it was only a matter of 2 mm! like it was said in the last thread, not a lot of room for error.
am running without the hub centric rings, but they will be in tomorrow, and i will change them out till them.
oh. and i got pulled by the cops. they went over the car with a fine tooth comb. paid particular attention to the custom exhaust and muffler, which is what alerted them to me in the first
now just waiting fornew emblems, cia and chromed cosmetics to arrive!
monday. new stereo. will dump 6k on that.

Violenteer,
That was a fine choice!
In lieu of replacing the brakes, painting the calipers with body-matching color would go a long way towards making them appear larger and more custom. Especially with the open-air design of the wheels you chose.
Just a thought?
