The coolant light means the PTCM sees SOMETHING wrong, low coolant, no communication with the Fan Control Module, etc. As has been pointed out, as a safety measure it could be that the PTCM is preventing A/C clutch engagement. I DO know that if the PTCM looses contact with the Fan Module, it does NOT prevent A/C engagement, trust me, I know!

But if there is something else going on... then maybe James is right. (And he often is.)

Why don't you update your info so we know where you are? That way, if any of us are local, we can tell you where we go. (Example: In Atlanta, you want to go to BuckHead Import Service.) I have a local shop that works on Mercedes, in fact, one of the partners in the business has a wife who drives an SLK or CLK - this guy knows MY car and I trust him completely, and he only charges $90 per hour.
