For some reason I have never had this problem, but if I did sanding would be the way I went too. The other cool idea was the leather wrap, I know I saw pic's somewhere of it done. It looked amazing.
Leather looks ok if it matches the interior, but unless you make them velcro, you could no longer remove the door panel with them installed
